Re: hpux volume group

Hi,
Look at vgmodify command if you are on 11.31 or 11.23. The man said that -l max_lv is for setting the maximum number of logical volumes that the volume group is allowed to contain.
vgmodify is unsupported for 11.11, but if you have a HP support, perhaps they could give it to you.

Re: hpux volume group

It is not recommended to put application data to vg00: you should create a separate VG for application data instead and mount its LV(s) wherever needed.

But if your system only has one (hopefully mirrored) system disk and no other storage, it may be acceptable to create one or two application LVs to vg00. We do this with lone mini-servers deployed at remote locations for data logging purposes.

255 LVs in vg00 is way too much: most likely it means your storage configuration needs a re-design.

Re: hpux volume group

Hello,
You do not say which system type nor which os release you have.
Although it may be posssible to use vgmodify on vg00, I would not use it for this volume group.

If you have to resize and, or reorganise vg00 take an ignite backup to tape and boot from it and then use the menus to rearrange vg00 to your requirements.

As other have said the primary purpose of vg00 is to hold the operating system and its required configuation and logging files.
vgmodify is only supported from 11.23 onwards make sure you have all the patches on before you try and use it.
