Background story :
I would like to create new VMguest by restoring the make_tape_recovery from other VMguest from the same VMhost.
the method is try boot the HPUX support DVD and recover the disk from the tape.
but found the problem below :
ERROR: "/var/opt/ignite/CONFIG", line 184: Illegal character: "i"
ERROR: "/var/opt/ignite/CONFIG", line 184: syntax error
ERROR: Problems were encountered while parsing config file:
"/var/opt/ignite/CONFIG".
ERROR: net_cfg_prep: Problems were encountered while parsing the
configuration files. See the messages above for details. Using
instl_adm with the -T and/or -D options on the server may help isolate
the problem. (See instl_adm(1M) and instl_adm(4) man pages.)
and when got the Ignite-UX menu, found this error below :
NOTE: The disk with Device Specifier: "0/0/0/0.0.0" does not exist on
the system and was specified in the configuration for the system. No
substitute disk could be found, so it will be removed from the
configuration.
I found that the other VMguest have "0/0/0/0.0.0" as a boot disk.
What's the solution for this ?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Adi.

Re: install new VM from ignite tape
What version of HPVM?
What version of ignite - does the version of ignite match the version on the install DVD?
What OS version and release are you trying to install?
Basically you need to provide a LOT more detail...
If I was going to guess the problem right now - have you made sure you haven't presented the boot disk as an AVIO device? Your ignite image may not have AVIO drivers in it (remember you can convert to an AVIO disk later once you've installed AVIO drivers in the VM guest)

Re: install new VM from ignite tape
Thanks for your response.
At what point during the install do you get all this? After loading the tape or before?
Ans :
I'm already add the disk for boot disk on VMguest, also add the network, the DVDrom drive, the tape. After that I use hpvmconsole and boot to DVD & try to restore the tape from it.
What version of HPVM?
Ans :
Version A.03.00.00
What version of ignite - does the version of ignite match the version on the install DVD?
Ans :
Version C.7.5.142, I'm using HPUX Support Plus DVD. Is it the correct one OR should I use the HPUX installation DVD ? How do I know the version of ignite match with the version on the DVD ?
What OS version and release are you trying to install?
Ans :
HP-UX 11.23

Ans :
Meaning I dont need to introduce any disk(s) to my new VMguest ?

Adi.

SolutionHP always reccomend that when doing 2-step recoveries the Ignite version on the DVD matches the version used to create the tape. IIRC if it's an install DVD you should check in the Help section once you've booted off the DVD to get the version
Assuming it doesn't match (and the version of Ignite you mention sounds pretty recent to be on an 11iv2 install DVD), you can always create your own boot DVD as described here:
http://docs.hp.com/en/5992-1999/5992-1999.pdf
go to p207
You can ignore my comments about AVIO as HPVM 3.0 didn't have AVIO at all...

Re: install new VM from ignite tape
Good day to you !
Thanks for the documentation & sharing your knowledges to me.
Any reason for using such an old version of HPVM?
Ans : will take a look & study first for the new version of HPVM and the impact to our production system.
How do I know the Ignite version on the DVD matches the version used to create the tape ?
I know how to check the Ignite version that I used to create the tape, but I cant see there's an Ignite software when I do :
swinstall -s /cdrom

No, of course there isn't, that's just looking at the DVD... but the Ignite software *is* running when you boot off the DVD. As I said, If I Recall Correctly, when you boot off the DVD and get to the main installation screen, if you go into "Help" it should show you the Ignite version in there.
