SolutionFor DNS or proxy, any Linux distro would be perfect, however you may need to secure the server by yourself (ex : using iptables, manually deactivate unused services, etc...)
For online updates, Debian remains one of the better choices. I'm not sure Slack or Gentoo offer similar capabilities.
Good lcuk.

Re: internal Squid / Bind server with SLACKWARE or GENTOO
All the distributions distribute same proxy and DNS servers (ofcourse different versions). They generally do not modify the contents, so regardless of SLACKWARE or GENTOO or any other distribution you will get same proxy/DNS server.
You should look at other possibilities like kernel capability, distribution's support for your hardware, security updates, upgrade path etc.
I have used slackware and I like it. it is very good for developers and the people who want to tinker conifguration files directly by them selves and mess it ;). It does not provide online updates and GUI tools for configuration. you are on your own for most of it.
I am not sure about Gentoo.
I would better recommend Fedora Core 4, it is the latest and greatest on the base of RedHat. It should satisfy most of your requirements including online update using YOU.
Hope this helps,
Gopi

Re: internal Squid / Bind server with SLACKWARE or GENTOO
I've setuped
BIND 9.2.4
and
SQUID 2.5.STABLE9
on Debian Sarge Stable and I'm happy.
