Re: limit for sending mail using mailx command

Limit of size or counts?

I don't know of any. mailx may not like files over 2 Gb.

Re: limit for sending mail using mailx command

I never reached the limit, make sure that where the files are temporaly stored had a large file option in the fstab. and that your file system is not getting full.
ps be aware that mail is not a goot solution for sending large amounts of data, most mailservers are bouncing mails why before unix is giving you a limit. user sftp scp instet...

ps if the anwser is different per setup. just guess you max filesize trippel it and test if the mail is working... is always better than getting the anwser here, just because there are so manny varibles...

Re: limit for sending mail using mailx command

there is a limit on this:
Recipient addresses specified on the command line must total less than
1024 characters in length. You may declare an alias or group (see
COMMANDS below) to specify a recipient address or list of addresses of
up to 8191 characters, and use that alias or group name (though each
address in the list must still be less than 1024 characters). If you
wish to specify a list of recipient addresses of greater length than
this, have your system administrator declare an alias or group in the
system alias file /etc/mail/aliases and use that alias name instead.

Re: limit for sending mail using mailx command

Hi,

Thankx for your reply...

1024 characters for one mail id.....and 8191 for total number of characters of address ....

Is there any limit for "Number" of mail ids ..like only 256...or 128...etc...

Because we face a severe issue...though total number of characters are less than 8191...some of the recipients are not getting the mail...

Thanks again....

Re: limit for sending mail using mailx command

please don't put me on that To or Cc list ;)
It would anyway end in the spam folder...
I assume several mailsweepers/spamfilters etc would block this, so it depends on who you send to or if you also check outbound in your organisation (many organisations block in order to avoid viruses/spammers to send from their organisation).
This is however not a mailx limitation.

It sounds as you try to input everything at once to the mailx...
Most programs have limits for their commandlines, input field or buffers ;)

What you need to do is to loop over the addresses. I assume you dont type those 8191 characters... so you would have to check the calling program for what to do.
