linux missing operating system

Dear All,

I have a Linux enterprise 4.5 installed on ML 350 G3 proliant servers.
At boot it is showing an error message:
Missing Operating System.

Note that all the hardware including the disks is Ok and working properly.

Your help is highly appreciated.

Re: linux missing operating system

Check the boot order in the bios, making sure that the media that has the OS installed on it is early in the boot list (before any other disks).

If that's all set up correctly, then dig out a rescue disk (disk 1 of the install media, type 'linux rescue'), throw it in, and see if it can mount the disk media.
One long-haired git at your service...

I have seen this several times when grub gets messed up. Also see it on systems with software mirroring on the devices that have /boot and grub isn't installed on both disks.

Re: linux missing operating system

Hi,

Has this setup ever worked, or are you having problems after the installation ?

If the latter, then this is a common problem when installing onto a machine with fibre attached disks, as well as a local SmartArray controller. The installer writes everything to the local disks (/dev/cciss/c0d0pX), but the boot loader (GRUB) gets installed on to the first fibre attached disk (/dev/sda). You have to select the Advanced option on the Boot Loader section of the installer to move the SmartArray controller to the top of the list...

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Rob
