lp printer problem

we have configured remote printers on hp server.
I am issuing the command on 2 servers' : lpstat -oprint_name
one server returns the request pending; else running successfully.
another server takes long time says the printer server connection down .
I tried to ping to the print server and the print server is down.
why the first server returns nothing. I checked the printer configuration of
both printers and the both printers are having same configurations.
what could be problem ?

Re: lp printer problem

Check the network cable connection to the printer server and also see if it has power.

Re: lp printer problem

There have been a couple of times where I had to completely power down an HP printer (with an internal JetDirect card) because the network interface got confused (especially if there were network problems between the printer and the lp server). And we used to have an external JetDirect box connected to a flaky coax segment that I would have to unplug and plug back in (the JetDirect, not the coax) every once in a while to get everything to re-sync. Not exactly the most SCIENTIFIC method, but it usually worked.

Re: lp printer problem

It sounds like you have a network problem. Get your ping to the print server/printer running and then worry about your printing.

Re: lp printer problem

I can not ping from both the servers since the print server is not in network.

My question is, when I issue lpstat -oprint_name in one server, it takes lot of
time and returns that "connection to ping server down" but in the other server
it come quickly and no error message.
