You could use the bare minimum, and that is only X without any window manager. That is when you will be exporting the remote display full screen. this works well in a citrix environment for example.

I use this approach to provide schoolers cheap desktop environments. Linux Terminals are diskless and can be at 512MB of RAM and as long as it has a network card that supports LAN boot -- you're good to go.
