back labeled 'line in', 'line out', 'phones'. I would like to be able to play around
with some telephony stuff but I cannot find documentation anywhere on what
these ports are for and what they are capable of. Can anyone help me?

Solutionthe ports you've listed are for audio devices: line in/out for audio input/output.
phones is for connecting a head phone (not e telephone) to hear audio from files.
You could check this program:
/usr/audio/bin/audio_editor (HP-UX 9.x) or
/opt/audio/bin/audio_editor
Regards
Andew

Re: modems and Model 735
also found following :
The backpanel of 735 is like
PHONES LINE OUT
(O) (O)
KYBD
HP-HIL SPEAKER MIC LINE IN
| | (O) (O) (O)
+-+
If I connected my external speaker to either PHONES or LINE OUT,
send_sound will generate a sound even under SPEAKER=ex environment
was set. On the other hand, if I connected a speaker to SPEAKER,
send_sound won't generate a sound under SPEAKER=ex, but generate a sound
without SPEAKER environment. This confirms me that "external" outputs
are "PHONES" and "LINE OUT", and "internal" output is "SPEAKER", so that
if user set SPEAKER=external, and no speaker connected to "external"
output, any sounds will not be generated.
use send_sound command to test (also comes with a man page).
