Is it really necessary for clients to install more than one OS on an integrity server?

stright answer is no. It is the ablity of integrity server which supports more than one OS. It is upto the clients requirments to have it or not.

Either your answer is very simple or you're leaving out some parts to it.

Technically, it is of course not necessary to install anything (if you don't need the server to do anything). No one forces a client to do so.

In the more productive sense, no -- it is not necessary to install more than one OS in order to have a backup on a non-virtualized server.

Now, if what you left out is "Is it necessary to install an OS on each vPar or Integrity Virtual Machine virtual server for a single physical server -- or is there some sharing that goes on to allow a single system image with different parameters/devices?" or something similar -- then yes, as far as I know it is required to install an OS on each virtual server. (Caveat: one vPar can run the OS (by using the boot device) of the underlying nPar -- it will just see less resources presumably).

That depends on entirely on what the server is going to be used for.

Without knowing a lot more details about the environment and the server use your question cannot be answered accurately.
