It's supposed to reduce fan noise.

Ignacio:
Has the fan always been noisy? Or is this something new? Occasionally we find a fan goes bad, even in the first year of the life of a PC. Perhaps this one is bad. Any chance of trying another? Is it a ball-bearing fan?
