oracle apps on linux intel platform

Admins,

I was wondering if anyone could share their experinces w/ the subject--pros vs. cons.

Management has been convinced that this is the way of the future (opposed to hp-ux boxes) and I just want to be better informed about this scenario.

Re: oracle apps on linux intel platform

I've run Oracle apps on HP-UX and played with it on Linux.

Its a big application needs lots of resources and really can't be run prod on just one Linux server. You'll need Red Hat Enterprise Ed 2.1 and want a few Intel boxes pitching in on processing and such to make it work.

The obvious advantage, is that the Linux license is not a high cost item. You'll need support in a production environment and that will still cost bucks.

On the contrary however, running it on one big HP-UX box means you don't need to deal with clusters. It is a single point of failure.

This is a marketplace battle going on. Dell is trying to convince people that using free OS software on clusters of their Intel servers is a better cost item than proprietary Unix on RISC hardware.

RISC hardware blows the doors off of Linux configurations in high volume online real time transaction environments. Our management won't even hear of the world Linux and won't even let me have one little test box.

I know Dell is making progress in the marketplace with this stance. I know that HP-UX is the most reliable OS on the planet and that Dell still has a lot of backend Solaris boxes running Sun Solaris behind their firewall.

So, as usual its a mixed bag.

Oracle apps or ias is installable under Linux, but its not such an easy situation.

Hi there.
With a single Intel box you might face a few problems.
Try to get some info about Oracle Real Application Cluster.
With this you should be able to cluster some Intel boxes for your needs.
But Oracle Applications really uses resources like popcorn.
