oracle installation

Hi,

I am trying to install oracle 8.0.6 on hp-ux 10.20.

In-between the installation, installer is exiting and shows "Memory fault"!!

Please someone tell me what could be the reason.

Thanks in advance,
Bharath.

Re: oracle installation

I've done this installation many times and 8.0.6 works fine on 10.20 but you need to check your release/installation manual to make sure that all of the required patches (which may have been superceded) and the kernel tunables have been applied before the installation.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: oracle installation

Hi bharat,

Definitely check the kernel parameters configured on your system. Here is a doc for installing oracle 8.0.6. (Check page 33)

http://docs.oracle.com/a84786/SHIPHOME/DOC/product_0/a75295.pdf

Do you see any other errors in syslog or dmesg?

Re: oracle installation

Hi,

Thanks for the quick responses!

But I am not sure what are the minimum patches I need to install.

I found nothing for "swlist", becasuse this is new laptop.

I checked page 33 of
http://docs.oracle.com/a84786/SHIPHOME/DOC/product_0/a75295.pdf
I have set shmmax 1073741824
shmmin 1
shmmni 100
shmseg 10
semmns 200
semmni 70

But still I am getting "orainst[230] Memory fault"

What is oraisnt[230] !!

Thanks,
Bharath.

Re: oracle installation

A couple of other things to check are maxdsiz (at least double the default 0x04000000 to 0x08000000) kernel parameter as well as swap and memory utilization (should have at least as much swap as physical memory and should also have pseudo_swap set to 1).

Re: oracle installation

Hi
As Santos mentioned, maxdsiz must be checked. This is important in the linking part of the installation, when the oracle executables are linked. Here the default size is not enough and maxdsiz must be set to at least 256M.

And if you are installing 64 bit Oracle, you still have to pump up the maxdsiz parameter (as well as the maxdsiz_64bit).

Re: oracle installation

Hi,

HP-UX 10.20 provides also some predefined tuned parametersets for the kernel. Perhaps they are not really optimized to your installation, but in most cases they will get your installation to work.

Have a look in SAM:

Kernel Configuration / Configurable Parameters / Actions / Apply tuned parameter set ...

There you will find a set for database Servers. If you apply this and restart your server, you should have no more problem installing your Oracle.

Hope this helps
