apart from the discussions about speed, it is possible to use hfs over lvm. Actually every system has it in /stand.
My systems are 100% Murphy Compliant. Guaranteed!!!

If you don't use LVM (oder prior 10.XX SDS) you can only address the disk in one part. The only thing you can do is to create a (hfs-) filesystem that is smaller than the disk at all, then the rest can be used as swap space.

You don't have to use vxfs on a LV and you have to you hfs on /stand (or the first LV on the disk if you have no stand) because the pdc/firmware (via the LIF) does only know the hfs filesystem and how to load the kernel from it.

Donald; LVM only provides the volumes in which you can create a filesystem (HFS or JFS). And yes you can have a mix of both.
