Re: problem installing linux

You have probably corrupted the ntfs volume by reducing it too much. Its a good idea to defragment prior to such operations.

You should do the following:

Attempt to boot the ntfs partition in windows, get your data off.

Then reformat the drive and do the installation over. Do Linux first, leave a ntfs partition, let grub manage the boot and install windows second.

I'm pretty sure at this point you've got no data to worry about formatting, but give it a shot.

If useful, please point this response.

Re: problem installing linux

1.If you still can boot with the operating system that uses the NTFS drive then first thing you should do after booting is running chkdsk to fix the entire partition.
2.After fixing the file system use the latest version of Partition manager.

Re: problem installing linux

thank you for your quick reply but in fact the hard drive is not corrupted at all,it is looking like it was at the very beginning(i mean when i bought it) ,partition magic wasn't starting the job yet ,and i got some info from linux users (check laptop linux and then choose compaq) that indeed i'm not the only one to face this problem, apparently over those tiny partitions bios stuff is stored!
i have really no idea wether i shouldn't format entire drive but as i heard apparently it's voiding warranty
