Re: read Unix tape

Hello Mark,

I think it all depends on how the tape was created, with what application? If
it is an Omniback tape, it can be read in both NT and UNIX. For details on how
to read an Omniback tape in NT or UNIX, click on the Maintenance/Support link
at the left and go into the Technical Knowledge Base. The document ID that has
the information is A5466991.

If the tape wasn't created with Omniback, how was it created? Is it a tar? If
you could supply some more details we might be able to do some more research
for you.

Best regards,

It was created by tar or cpio. Thank you.

Re: read Unix tape

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the additional info. Microsoft released a utility called PAX,
portable archive exchange, which is part of the NT Server Resource Kit. I have
never used the utility, there is very little documentation on how to use it,
and it's not supported. There are also a few other POSIX utilities available
in the Resource Kit if you're interested.

I found many third-party utilities that you could download for free on a trial
basis. I went out to Yahoo and did a search and it brought back several
different sites. You might want to check out Spiralcom's WinTAR or the Data
Interchange product from Novastor. There were lots of other products out there
too so check out some others and see what would work best for you.

Good Luck,

Re: read Unix tape

thank you for your info.

pax is good posix util, but it is not able to read data from the tape. Novastor
can only read Novastor fomated tape and Wintar can tar the file within
filesystem, not the row device like tape(the same as pax). If you can find any
util which can read Unix formated tape (tar, cpio, dump, dd etc.)on NT tape
device, it is certainly great. Thank you again.
