shut down problem

When I attempt to shut down windows 98 se, it usually requires that I manually
push the button on the computer. I do the usual, start, click on shutdown.
click OK, an wait for the automatic shutdown. What usually happens is that the
message comes on the monitor that Windows 98 is shutting down and then just
hangs or freezes. I wait and then push the off button on the computer. Once in
a great while, it will actually turn off the way that it should. I don't know
why it will and then most often won't. When I turn it back on, all is OK, I
don't get a message that Windows was turned off incorrectly so it must be OK to
do it this way. I just want to make sure I am not creating a problem in the
future with my computer since I have only had it since the middle of January.

I have the same problem with two Pavilion 4535s. My problem is due to the
networking card (I use LinkSys 10/100). Once it senses a network it won't allow
to disconnect the computer from the network and won't shut off. I found this by
eliminating the network but still am looking for an update to allow me to shut
off the PC normally.

To avoid shutting it with the main On-Off switch, I hit the Standby button on
the keyboard and any other key. It will cause to re-start the PC and - if it
doesn't go into the network - it will shut off normally when you repeat the
"Start - Shut Down - Shut Down procedure.

Hi Violet and Ruben,

There are several known problems with Win98 SE not shutting down properly.
Most are resolved by reconfiguring your anti-virus software to NOT scan on
shutdown, and then, installing the Win98 SE Shutdown Supplement from Microsoft.

The Shutdown Supplement fixes most of the shutdown problems everyone is
experiencing. They aren't usually related to the PC hardware but it's a
problem with Win98 SE and/or antivirus software. I think you'll be pleased
with how fast Win98 shuts down after applying the fix.

hi work for hewlett packard pavilion support. the shutting down problem you are
experiencing can be fixed.
click on start, click on run, type "msconfig" .at the system configuration
utility move the little black dot to selective start up. under that take out
the top two checks(process config.sys and autoexec.bat files)and the bottom
check (load start up group). the go to the tab that says "win.ini", click on
the plus sign next to "windows", take the checks out of "load=" and "run=".
then go to the tab that says "start up". if you have any model
*5**,*4**,*3**,*2**put a check mark next to: scanregistry, system tray,
keyboard manager, and also check your virus protection(vshwin32exe). if you
have any model *6** then check :scanregistry, system tray, hpsysdrv, USBMMKBD,
keyboard manager, HIDSERV and also check your virus protection(vshwin32exe).
then you shouldnt freeze or have any problems shutting down.
