Sometimes is a hardware issue ( insert 3 or 4 times a cleaning tape).
Some times is a tape related problem ( use another tape).
If it persist change the tape driver.

I tought to use the mstm diag utility to pass diagnostics to tape. Also, you can use a tape and make several tar file on it. Then, take a look to the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log to see if there are any new error entry.
Anyway, if you heve got a lot of this messages, the best you can do is change the tape.

I'm not sure if this has been resolved, but I get this message whenever the tape is full.
