t5125 thin client: USB->Serial Adaptor (PL2303) fails

I've got an HP t5125 thin client running the latest firmware image (L1ST3158 a).

Most USB devices seem to work fine (keyboard, mouse, flash ram stick).

However a PL2303 usb->serial converter does not work reliably. It is detected when inserted and very basic serial devices seem to work but things like modems or magcard readers do not - e.g. there is absolutely no response to an AT command)

The exact same converter and modems work fine on a PC running 2.6 kernel. I don't have a PC running a newish 2.4 kernel.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks

Maybe the PL2303x problem:

The PL2303 and PL2303x have the same USB ID but are not completely compatible - early drivers failed to recognise the difference and thereby fail to work.
