unix billion second bug

Hi,

May I know whether the unix billion second bug will affect hpux 11.00 and 10.20.

If so ,what is the patch ID?

Re: unix billion second bug

Hi,

Have a look at this thread,

http://us-support2.external.hp.com/cki/bin/doc.pl/sid=426a5c5011723ca446/screen=ckiDisplayDocument?docId=200000054955006

Let's keep our fingers crossed. I don't see any patch.

Thanks

Re: unix billion second bug

Starting on September 9, we started having problems across our campus with printing. We have over 100 HP printers on our campus. Most of which are either internal or external jet direct printers. What we are seeing is that jobs sent to the printers sit in the queue and do not print. It is as though the printer has lost communication with the network.

We use to see this happen on a regular basis with some external jetdirect printers. However, starting Monday, we are seeing this happen more often with both internal/external printers.

I came across this article in the forum concerning the "unix billion second bug". I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing problems with printing. Is it related to the billion second bug or is something else happening here.

I am the Manager of User Services at Washburn. I told the printer admin I would post a message to see if I could find anything out about this.

John

It is very unlikly that your printing problems are to do with losts of seconds.

Your printers that are having problems must have a common point ie hub, router or even the server.
Are the print jobs that are having problems different from usual - ie bigger.

$DRIFT ON

John, I am NOT a specialist in that area, but as far as I know, your printer problems are JetDirect related and, if I am not mistaken, related to one of the worms/viruses that is floating around. I have no specific pointers, but if you have Usenet access, you may want to check postings of around that time in the comp.sys.hp.* Newsgroups. Alternatively you can post to the appropriate ITRC forum.

We started thinking it was a problem caused by the billion bug simply because these problems started right around Sept. 8. Prior to Sept. 8 we would see printers attached to netstations have this problem on occassion. We would never see an internal jet direct device lose connection with the network and require a complete power off to correct.

We are having these problems throughout our campus. The problem does not happen every time either. It is almost as though when the printer goes into powersave, it is losing connection with the network. Something we have not experienced before prior to Sept. 8. Our printer administrator is receiving numerous complaints about this happening. She is at a loss as to why it is happening.

I found a document on the HP web site that HP was not aware of any problems related to printing and the Unix billion second bug. However, it was up to each site to test to make sure it was not a problem. In talking to our Sys. Admin., he thought the problem was probably related to the firmware or jetdirect software as opposed to the Unix system.

Frank, thank you for the comments. I would not think that it is a virus as the majority of viruses affect Microsoft products. We do have a dozen or so Microsoft NT systems, but we are seeing this problem from both Unix and NT print jobs. The program generating the print job does not seem to matter either. Whether it is a straight lpr or from a PowerPoint file, the printer simply stops responding.

Again, this does not happen all the time. I have not talked to the printer admin lately to find out how many complaints she had from Wednesday.

I will check that newsgroup to see what I can find. Thank you both (Paula and Frank) for the advice.
