using exchange server

Hi,
I have a desktop running Redhat 9 for test into the company and I'm asking If I can use it to check my mails through our local Exchange server?
is there any client I should install? is it free?

Lucky one !

You run RH9, that is to say that you have a super tool, called ximian evolution, that looks much like MS outlook. You can access it by the little enveloppe on the left bottom of your screen, or by redhat / Internet /evolution email.

Then just add a new account as you would do on outlook.

thanks but how can I configure it in order to get connected to our local exchange server?
what kind of type of server should I use when I try to configure Evolution account editor? (POP IMAP maildir format...?)
where could I put the name of the server?

Exchange itself ships with a web based client that will work with any browser shipped with Red Hat.

All you need to do is find out if your exhchange admin has it running.

Most admins do run it, in spite of the fact that its based on IIS web server. Quite leaky on the security side.


So in essence, you really don't NEED a client.

by default, Exchange uses MAPI. if that is the only way of mail exchange, then u need

if ur Exchange server supports POP3 or IMAP, u can configure any client which supports these protocols. to check this do this

telnet exchangeserver 110

if u get connected, then ur server is running POP3.

telnet exchangeserver 143

if u get connected, then ur server is running IMAP.

then u can configure ur client for the same. If u are switching from windows, then checkout Ximian Evolution. This provides a M$ look and feel.

i have never tried this but would suggest u to check this

this is from the mozilla and my experience with Mozilla firebird somehow tells that this will be a good try. (never tried it myself)
