These are two different actions.
- printer name .... hp
- Remote system Name .... *.*.*.*
- Remote printer name .... hp
These options don't agree either.
You may start by telling us how is your printer connected to the network. Via a network printserver such as JetDirect or is it attached to another computer (which OS)?

Re: /usr/sbin/rlpstat: Connection to *.*.*.* is down
HI
# hppi
You'll get a menu screen. Select option 3, diagnostics. Then option 2, Examine spooler operations, and enter the queue name, or '-' for a listing of all queues, you'll get some dianostics like "spooler 10_1 OK", then it will ask for a file to print, see a), ignore the next prompt for in or out and hit enter, then, and most importantly answer 'y' or yes to examine the file.
If you can examine the file then there is no problem. If you can't then ping, nslookup, etc.

Re: /usr/sbin/rlpstat: Connection to *.*.*.* is down
This is a remote printer so the remote system must understand Unix priting, specifically RFC 1179 protocol. If the remote system is a Windows box, Unix printing is not enabled by default. That would cause the down system report.
