waiting for transaction lock error

while uninstalling rpm on redhat 4.0, I am getting following warning and after this warning command gets hang and does nothing.

warning: waiting for transaction lock on /var/lock/rpm/transaction

when I forcefully come out from command execution, it gives following error.

error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lock/rpm/transaction

Any idea how to overcome this?

Re: waiting for transaction lock error

Shalom,

It would be helpful to know what rpm you are uninstalling.

Try rebooting the system, running updatedb and trying again.

You have some kind of problem with the rpm database and may be forced to rebuild it. There is a command on the rpm man page for this.
