wanting to upgrade from windows xp to windows x64

Hello.
i have a compaq presario with a amd x64 x2 processor, and when i bought the computer it came with windows xp but i want to put windows x64 on it because i have heard it improves proformance. But what i need to know is will i need any different motherboard drivers or anything, and compaq have made a partition with recovery software on it if i put windows x64 on my computer will the recovery software still work or will i need to format that partition aswell and install new recovery software?

Re: wanting to upgrade from windows xp to windows x64

HI Richard,

You do need other drivers for x64 WinXP. But if your system supports it HP has it on his driver page, If you want me to help you locate them I need the exact model of presario you have. If you want to look for yourself go to:
www.hp.xom/support/files

Select that you want to download drivers etc. and type in your model, You may get a few options you have to select your model from the list. After that select the correct OS, that would be Windows XP x64

Intalling it from a WinXPx64 disk can be done without harming the recovery partition, but if you are not carefull you can remove it. Druing setup you can state were windows has to be installed to, YOu alrady see 2 partitions, on of them if NTFS formatted (that is the partion your current windows is on) and one may even be called diagnostic or recovery partition. \
You have to select the NTFS partition.

But to be one the safe side I would look in your startmenu if HP did not include a program to bachup the recovery on disks. I do not know if your model supports that.

Have a nice day,
HTH, Ronald

Re: wanting to upgrade from windows xp to windows x64

Hi Richard,
Ik had a look and HP itself does not have the driver availeble, atleast not yet, system is prety new, so it may come at a later moment.

I advise to mail HP to ask when the are going to support Windows x64.

Have a nice day

Re: wanting to upgrade from windows xp to windows x64

Richard,
If you want to use non HP drivers:

The site RaFa mentioned, only have the sounddrivers you need, You have a Realtek AC'97 chip, there are a view versions of those, so I hope it works.
http://www.short-media.com/download.php?d=489

You have an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset on your motherboard, I believe the video is onboard, So you need these drivers.
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894

If video is not onboard, you can use these for the video part, the driver above may install coreect chipset drivers.
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27
(HP says there is a ATI X1300 in your system so one of these should fix your videocard)

LAN is onboard, so hopefully there in the chipset packet, otherwise write down what is says in wondows now and I may be able to help you find one. I came accros one posebillity that you have the Realtek 8139 Lan chip. That one is also on the site RaFa mentioned:
http://www.short-media.com/download.php?d=209

You also have a memory card reader if I'm correct, I did not find any drivers, so hopefully windows detects them.

Ghis drivers may work, these are just my firts gueses to use, when I looked arround

Have a nice day,
