what happened to minimized applications?

I seem to have clicked something...

When I minimize an application it used to place a holder of types onto the panel so I could click on the holder and the application would maximize again. Now when I minimize it seems that there is no holder on the panel that I can click - how do I maximize the application again?

I found it - it is the window switcher that is added to the panel. I must have said to remove it. I have put it back now.
