Re: what is the device name for a pci modem(inner modem) recognized by rh?

I'd be picking it's /dev/ttyS3, or something very similar.

Check /proc/ioports, and look for the 'serial' values. See what address it comes up as. Standard COM ports are as such:

0x3f8 (IRQ4) = COM1 = /dev/ttyS0
0x2f8 (IRQ3) = COM2 = /dev/ttyS1
0x3e8 (IRQ4) = COM3 = /dev/ttyS2
0x2e8 (IRQ3) = COM4 = /dev/ttyS3

If it's something different, then you'll need to provide us with some further information, like what COM ports the BIOS reports upon bootup, and what 'serial' items you have in /proc/ioports.

Now, this is assuming that your laptop internal modem isn't a WinModem (i.e. requires windows drivers in order to work).. Perhaps you should also double check http://www.linux-laptop.net and see if there is any information on your make/model of laptop..

yet the record in /proc/ioports is :
fce0-fce7 : Rockwell Internal HCF 56k modume

seems it has been recognized, but ttyS0 is not it

Doubt whether it will work at all under GNU/Linux. It is better you trade-in this winmodem for an internal pcmcia modem. Maybe this link can be of limited help, http://www.olitec.com/pub/HSF_V1.01.02_K2.2.14.tar
