it shows me nobody in /etc/passwd, I've seen this for the last 10 years and shrugged my shoulders
what purpose does it serve?
can I remove nobody from /etc/passwd ?

Re: your nobody til somebody loves you
last parameter in /etc/passwd
should not be a shell.
I believe nobody is used for XDMCP connections, although I was always a bit puzzled like you!!
Later,
Bill

Re: your nobody til somebody loves you
The user (and uid) 'nobody' is used by NFS.

Re: your nobody til somebody loves you
-2 is the uid assigned to anonymous NFS mount users.
Make sure that no shell is associated with it.
I suggest that you reain the entry and nobody is expected to be -2 and nobody else.
Regards, Clay

Re: your nobody til somebody loves you
In /etc/passwd the uid of nobody is -2 this is assigned to anonymous NFS mount users.
Do allow any shell at the end of the line.
You can see now that some people love you, so assign points and listen more to Eric Clapton.
