5 Benefits of Monitoring Your Cloud at Scale with Monasca in HPE Helion OpenStack 2.0

Finding an effective cloud monitoring strategy is a key part of your successful move to the cloud from your traditional environment. In this blog we will examine many of those keys as well as how to map various points of view to the cloud monitoring point of view.

Monitoring solutions have been around for decades, but in many respects they have yet to address the requirements of monitoring large scale public and private clouds. As a system administrator, it’s a strategy that can complicate your life, especially if up until now you’ve managed a traditional dedicated infrastructure environment.

What do you need to know about changes in cloud deployments that require improved monitoring tools?

  • Scale and complexity is increasing: Cloud environments may require monitoring across multiple regions, multiple clouds, thousands of hosts, and hundreds of thousands of VMs, containers, and applications.
  • Speed enables innovation: Containers and VMs can now be deployed in seconds and live for minutes or hours vs. dedicated infrastructure that lives for years.
  • Improved Service Level Agreements: A typical cloud SLA offers 99%+ availability which requires fine grain monitoring to quickly detect and resolve problems generates big data.

These changes create a new set of monitoring issues that must be addressed. Effective monitoring is critical to staying ahead of system issues and helping to make informed resource utilization decisions.  Proper monitoring gives you the information needed to utilize efficiently existing resources and provides supporting data to plan for your future investments.

The OpenStack® project Monasca enables you to monitor the resources in just about any size cloud. A few highlights include:

  • Monitor hundreds of thousands of virtual machines and containers
  • Monitoring data can be stored in an on-line, retrievable, lossless form
  • Monitoring is dynamic and self-service, so you can easily add new resources and monitor them independently.

The recently released HPE Helion OpenStack® includes the turnkey, open source project: Monasca (Monitoring at Scale).  Monasca within Helion OpenStack 2.0 offers 5 main benefits:

  1. Simplifies the operator experience by providing preconfigured and managed monitoring services
  2. Saves money by eliminating the need to certify a separate monitoring infrastructure
  3. Increases uptime by enabling quicker incident resolution time
  4. Enables competitive SLAs with big data technology
  5. Seamlessly integrates with your existing management tool set

Out of the box, and using pre-defined and configurable health rules, Helion OpenStack with Monasca monitors all of the OpenStack core services for, availability and performance to ensure your OpenStack users are able to schedule resources when they need them…..and that the resources perform to the user’s expectations. Unlike many other systems, Helion OpenStack 2.0 with Monasca offers run-time configurability. Alarms can be dynamically adjusted and managed in a one-to-many relationship. This avoids having to manually declare each alarm and make time consuming configuration changes.

Monitoring at scale? Increased uptime? Not a problem. With Helion OpenStack, you have one less thing to worry about as a cloud systems administrator.
