A legacy infrastructure moved to cloud improves AWS usability

Nava Solutions.PNG

When Nava Solutions needed more from its hardware-based infrastructure the software company faced a big question: how do we cost-effectively move to the cloud while maintaining operations with Amazon Web Services (AWS)? By enhancing existing AWS capabilities as well as improving Dev/Test and build operations, and reducing costs, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Helion Eucalyptus was the answer. The HPE Helion Eucalyptus private cloud solution enabled Nava Solutions to capitalize on its existing hardware, streamline and automate its IT operations, and get more out of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

“The AWS skills definitely come in handy [on HPE Helion Eucalyptus],” said Hutch Kolozyan, Nava Solutions director. “However, we also found that working with Eucalyptus makes us appreciate the AWS APIs even more and we make use of it more often.”

The limits of a hardware-based system

A company that specializes in developing tools for cloud solutions providers and securing cloud infrastructures for cloud migration, Nava Solutions used its hardware-based infrastructure to Dev/Test entirely on its servers, and brokered to public cloud using AWS. Often an entire server was dedicated to a single test creating a bottleneck, slowing down productivity and driving up costs.

Nava Solutions was also having difficulty maintaining its build servers due to hardware requirements and operating systems (OS) issues. The company’s IT regularly had to fix individual points of failure in its hardware and software.

 The cloud solution

With HPE Helion Eucalyptus, Nava Solutions leverages its existing hardware enhancing the performance capabilities in its Dev/Test environment.

 The benefits:

  • HPE Helion Eucalyptus APIs are compatible with AWS APIs enabling Nava Solutions to Dev/Test in its own private cloud while having the ability to use AWS for large workloads the on-premises infrastructure cannot handle.
  • Compatible APIs enables the same support from the company’s automation tools - Chef, Jenkins, Vagrant, Puppet, and Chaos Monkey.
  • HPE Helion Eucalyptus deployment prompts a new build with each code check-in.

With hardware, private cloud, and public cloud seamlessly working together, the Nava Solutions IT team can focus on value-added tasks and explore new possibilities in the company’s Dev/Test environment.
