Enterprise customers can now develop cloud native .NET applications on Cloud Foundry® technology through an open & scalable HP Helion Development Platform

.NET apps are top of mind for enterprise customers looking for a solution that drives innovation and accelerates application development. We are excited to announce that as part of the 1.2 version of HP Helion Development Platform (HDP), we now support Droplet Execution Agents for Windows (DEAs) and fully integrate with Microsoft Visual Studio, making it easier than ever for enterprise customers to develop cloud native applications on our platform. This new .NET application support stands alongside existing Java application support complete the spectrum of our open source based solution for the enterprise. We are making .NET a first class citizen in Cloud Foundry platform.

We have extended the Cloud Foundry open source code to support Windows DEAs, which run on HP Helion OpenStack® on Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 server cores. We have developed the application container technology to support the launching of DEAs for Windows and now provide our customers with a “bring your own license” model for leveraging Microsoft resources on a backbone of infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) that is open and scalable and offers enterprise grade security.

“Our enterprise customers are making the move to cloud native application architectures. They have strong interest in the HP Helion Development Platform, which is based on Cloud Foundry technology, as a great step to cloud native. However, enterprises need .NET support in order to seriously adopt and use a Cloud Foundry based solution. Building full .NET support in the HP Helion Development Platform is our way of answering a key need from our customers and, by contributing this code back into the Cloud Foundry Foundation, we are deepening our commitment to the open source community.”- Bill Hilf, SVP Product Management, HP Helion

Accelerate enterprise Windows application development in the cloud

For this release, we knew that a modern, cloud developer experience for .NET was very important. Our team focused on empowering the .NET developer to quickly leverage the development environment and tools they are used to in order to deploy Windows applications on the HDP. We have built a consistent experience for building and deploying applications leveraging a new Visual Studio plugin and Cloud Foundry .NET SDK to provide quick access to libraries and tools necessary throughout the .NET application lifecycle.

“Microsoft recognizes the value of open source Platform-as-a-Service solutions for enterprise customers, and we’re working with leading companies and communities like Cloud Foundry to incorporate the best of our cloud platform and tools capabilities,” said Steve Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President of Developer Platform & Evangelism and Chief Evangelist for Microsoft. “We are pleased to see the work the HP Helion team has done to further make Cloud Foundry easy to use for .NET developers by adding native Cloud Foundry support inside the Visual Studio toolset they are already familiar with.”

Leverage existing SQL Server environments

Enterprises with a strong Windows application background have a lot of Windows ecosystem pieces that need to be considered in the transformation to the cloud. One of the most important ones is Microsoft SQL Server. HDP 1.2 fully supports SQL Server running on HP Helion OpenStack, but we also enable customers to start building cloud native applications on our platform while still connecting to SQL resources hosted somewhere else through the CF SQL Server Service and APIs. This is a great step toward moving and adapting workloads for the cloud in a step-wise process instead of re-architecting everything from scratch, which is often not a feasible approach for enterprise customers.

Giving back to the Cloud Foundry community

We are working with the Cloud Foundry Foundation to contribute all these features back to the community, in true open source spirit.

“This is another important step in unleashing Cloud Foundry onto Microsoft platforms,” said Cloud Foundry CEO Sam Ramji. “On the heels of Microsoft’s commitment to Azure support for Cloud Foundry, major contributions from HP help quickly broaden Cloud Foundry support for Microsoft and .NET developers.”
