Australian IT provider sees revenue soar with HP Helion CloudSystem

blue apache.jpgblueAPACHE is one of Australia’s leading IT service providers, offering an extensive portfolio of technology and communications services, including managed services and support, Internet and private network, telephony and collaboration, software and solutions, consulting and procurement, and—more recently—hybrid and private cloud services. In 2010, with the launch of public cloud environments, the Melbourne-based company started evaluating how it could deliver greater value to its clients.

It wasn’t a specific problem that led blueAPACHE to the cloud. Instead, it was an opportunity for the business to remain relevant to its clients and continue to grow its services portfolio.

For many years prior to building its cloud, the company had been providing a form of IT as a Service (ITaaS) offerings, relying primarily on human resources—its team of expert engineers—to assist clients. It started noticing changes, however, in the way clients were consuming technology, and it was this evolution that ultimately led blueAPACHE to pursue the cloud. The hard choice for the company wasn’t so much a question of whether to move to the cloud. Rather, it was how to make the move.

Chris Marshall, founder and managing director at blueAPACHE, admits, “We had to decide whether we invest in our infrastructure and be held accountable for the solutions that we were delivering to our clients, or do we become a cloud broker and aggregator?” Because blueAPACHE is a company that prides itself on its technical capabilities and deep skill set, the organization ultimately made the decision to leverage its in-house capabilities.

Solution and benefits

In deploying its cloud solution, Marshall says, “HP was the obvious choice.” blueAPACHE’s private cloud was built in 2010 using HP Helion CloudSystem with HP BladeSystem c3000/c7000 Enclosures, and HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage. The company also turned to HP Services to help deploy and configure the solution.

Using HP technology has enabled blueAPACHE to scale its infrastructure as the business has grown. In fact, the company started out modestly with a single data center deployment, which has now evolved into three geographically disparate data centers located along Australia’s eastern seaboard.

Today the company offers a complete set of end-to-end offerings, including a disaster recovery (DR) service using HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage. Revenues have soared. Darron Hutchison, the company’s marketing and communications manager, says, “We’re seeing significant growth, thanks to the HP solution, especially in ongoing annuity revenue as opposed to our transactional revenue.” And by shifting from a procurement and implementation company to a service organization, blueAPACHE is in a better position to build closer relationships with its clients. Marshall adds, “HP technology has allowed us to transform our business into to an organization that is very relevant for today’s market.”

Why HP Helion

As an HP Gold Partner, blueAPACHE has been doing business with HP for quite some time. The company is a firm believer in the HP Helion and Converged Infrastructure strategies and complete solution offering. “Getting everything from one vendor was very attractive to our engineering team,” says Marshall. That is not to say this was an easy win for HP. According to Marshall, Cisco and EMC were definitely in the running and eager to secure blueAPACHE’s business.

The decision to go with HP, however, really goes back to blueAPACHE’s firm belief in accountability. When evaluating relationships, it knew it wanted to work with a vendor that wouldn’t just help when things were going well, but that would willingly own problems and proactively look for ways to overcome challenges. “What really impressed us,” says Marshall, “was the way HP responded when things weren’t going the way they were meant to.” He adds, “That’s what gave us confidence in selecting HP as a partner to build our infrastructure on.”
