Automation and DevOps: Learn what Lloyds Banking, BT, AVEA Telecom and Société Générale discovered

One of the most valuable things anyone can do at a conference is to learn from other attendees. That’s why many look forward to “Birds of a Feather” sessions, at which existing customers take the stage to share their own experiences about people, process and HP technologies with other attendees.

Recently at HP Discover Barcelona, a panel of IT leaders from European enterprises shared their insights about adopting automation, orchestration, cloud management and DevOps. Panelists from Lloyds Banking Group, AVEA Telecom, British Telecom, Société Générale, and Automation Logic, presented their use cases and the results they have yielded.

Here are a few highlights of the session:

Use Cases Adopted by Panelists

  1. Provisioning and patching across servers and databases — Lloyds Banking Group began using HP Server Automation and HP Database and Middleware Automation software for patching and provisioning. Both offer different business value: while patching delivers improved regulatory compliance, automated provisioning provides greater agility and faster time-to-market. Overall, Lloyds has seen a big savings in operations because it allows IT teams to complete tasks without waiting on database administrators. Previously, it took 40 people five days to execute patching, and automation has already provided 30 percent savings with more to come.
  2. IT Operations monitoring — With HP Business Service Management and HP Operations Orchestration, AVEA Telecom has been able to reduce the workload of its Ops team, while improving SLAs and response time. The Turkish company experiences 30,000 cases a month. But with IT process automation and workflows it can resolve many cases instead of requiring employee intervention.
  3. “First time right” application patching — British Telecom has used server automation to help manage critical and growing health services. They deployed an automated application patching factory model.
  4. DevOps — At Société Générale, they’ve used automation to implement a DevOps strategy that supplements offshoring and outsourcing initiatives, creating a digital value chain that lets them move faster.

Best practices recommendations

The panelists also provided some thoughts about how to make the most of automation and orchestration.

Cloud comes with certain pre-requisites, they noted. Generally, these can be addressed through automation and orchestration but you need to strike a balance between SLAs and the Cloud’s abilities. Keeping this in mind will help guide you to choose the right business model.

Finally, panelists weighed in what it takes for automation to support a long-term DevOps strategy. While automating simple tasks takes care of a base layer in your operations and can quickly provide up to 25 percent efficiency improvements, using automation and orchestration for DevOps brings both value and efficiency. ROI is difficult to measure, they say, but this is a higher level strategic initiative. Specifically, panelists recommended that an application architecture project lead should be on your DevOps team early on. Société Générale advised that for DevOps, IT needs to address people and process challenges related to training, methodology adoption, and project management.

Thanks to all for their valuable insights!
