Best Practices in Hybrid Delivery

Guest Post:  Deborah L Anthony, PhD, PMP, IT Transformation Strategist

In 2011, HP published the Hybrid Delivery Strategy based on ten years of experience with customers who were seeking to improve and optimize IT.  The introduction of cloud computing in the industry gave HP the impetus to step up to the challenge and provide a structured approach to the development of client IT delivery models. This allowed HP to  take advantage of the best of all the various business models and create a safe pathway through the complex landscape of IT sourcing and delivery options.

Four years later, HP’s Service Delivery Transformation Reference Model continues to evolve and retain its relevance as clients engage in transforming IT.  Engaging with clients over the past four years has provided insights into what works – proven best practices.

Organizations that are highly effective in matching the IT delivery with the “consumer’s business model”:

FOCUS ON BUSINESS OUTCOMES – Ultimately, the role of IT is to assist/support/enable the provisioning of business information.  Best practice IT service delivery moves away from just provisioning infrastructure and releasing applications into production toward the recognition of the value of the information IT is provisioning – enabling critical business functions.  By identifying services with its business value, defining the “service with its system of technical and applications attributes”, IT is able to measure, monitor and report on the performance of the digital platform in terms of enabling the business to – grow market, grow revenue, secure a competitive edge.

FOCUS ON SERVICES as they align to BUSINESS PROCESSES – IT used to be a back office/corporate function that supported other back office/corporate functions such as Finance and HR.  That hasn’t been the “real world” for over two decades.  Today digital platforms enable every aspect of every business function.  IT organizations typically do not know or understand the nature of the lines of business served.  Highly effective IT organizations are learning to leverage configuration management systems to identify services as logical configuration items mapping the relationships of all the technical components required to deliver the service as attributes of the logical CI.

FOCUS ON A SERVICE MANAGEMENT LIFECYCLE – Mapping the end-to-end delivery of each service -from business outcome thru functional requirements to tactical delivery and ultimately achieving business results to decommission.  An end-to-end delivery schema is critical to selecting the right IT tools for automation, and operations.  A Service Life Cycle approach assures a single structure that anchors IT operational delivery, allowing for both analogue and digital processes to co-exist without undue complexity.  Service Life Cycle Management forms the framework of the IT service delivery model integrating both manual and highly automated processes.
