CENACE sees what’s truly possible—in the cloud

For Ecuador’s National Electricity Operator, CENACE, a simple IT upgrade play turned into a strategic and high-speed journey to the cloud. This journey is slated to transform its leadership role among the companies that make up Ecuador’s electrical sector—and among its international counterparts.

Turning one step ahead into giant leaps forward

CENACE is a strategic, public-interest organization currently involved in the legal and technical operation of the country’s Interconnected National System (NIS). The organization has strong ties with its clients, including the Electricity Ministry, ARCONEL; generation, distribution, and transmission companies; and the electrical operators of neighboring countries that participate in Ecuador’s electrical ecosystem.

The organization was experiencing IT process and management issues as well as hardware and software infrastructural obsolescence. To address these problems and improve overall IT productivity, CENACE considered creating a Network Operations Center (NOC) with new hardware and software technology. What it quickly discovered in discussions with HP, however, was that a complete transition to the cloud would help the organization meet these immediate goals—and much broader strategic and commercial objectives.

Numbers that speak volumes

CENACE’s private cloud is slated to evolve over several years. Most recently, the organization created its foundational cloud layer with HP Helion CloudSystem Enterprise, HP ProLiant Gen8 servers, and HP EVA p6350 Storage. Its initial goal was to take advantage of HP Helion CloudSystem’s automation and orchestration capabilities to speed provisioning and streamline IT operations. In just a few short months, the organization has seen productivity increase substantially and human error decrease by 20 percent. Likewise, resource utilization, which was roughly at 40–50 percent prior to deployment, is now at 80 percent—with the expectation of that figure growing to 100 percent.

CENACE is also experiencing a major transformation in IT’s role within the business. IT teams, previously pressured by system maintenance, can now focus on more strategic initiatives. But this is just the start. In the next several years, CENACE will evolve its cloud to provide IaaS and PaaS services to member companies within the electrical sector.

HP Technology Services played a significant role in this win. HP consultants worked closely with CENACE via the HP Cloud Workshop to explore what the cloud could enable, identify cloud initiatives that would support CENACE’s needs, and formulate an action plan. HP provided several different strategic and economic scenarios based on CENACE’s specific criteria. And HP is advising the organization on its future cloud roadmap. CENACE is also using business analytics software, HP IT Executive Scorecard to track and evaluate IT performance metrics throughout this journey.

HP gets real and seals the deal

According to Juan Francisco Bastidas, the sales lead for this account, “It was this level of genuine engagement from HP Technology Services—and particularly the consulting group—that helped HP win this cloud deal and seal HP’s reputation with CENACE as a true strategic advisor.”

While several of HP competitors also bid on the CENACE contract, these vendors were trying to compete through price differentiation. They weren't able to offer the value HP could in terms of its in-depth engagement and ongoing strategic assistance. HP proved to CENACE that it thoroughly understood the organization’s needs, could transform operations today with its new cloud system, and consequently leverage CENACE's position to become a leader of IT services in the near future.
