Luton and Dunstable Hospital.jpgFunding and staffing are major issues but hospitals still need to plan ahead and use technology as the weapon in their fight for greater efficiency. Luton & Dunstable NHS Trust is doing just that with an ambitious three-year plan that will bring closer co-operation between the different services and more information and control for the patients.

The Trust is providing healthcare services for 300,000 outpatients every year; 300 people a day visit its A&E department and it runs a specialist Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit. Virtually all its services rely on technology so it’s no surprise that IT is the foundation for its future blueprint and that blueprint is spelling out a bright future.

The solution

Luton & Dunstable had a ‘business benefit realization plan’ and to make this a reality, it’s called on HP and its Platinum Partner OCSL. The result is a private managed cloud with vital services and quality protected by a secure N3 link and mirrored data centers. It’s based on HP Helion OpenStack technology that’s designed to deliver open, agile, secure and manageable cloud services.

Working with HP and OCSL underpins exciting new developments. The Trust has put in a £2.4 million bid to the £500 million Government’s Digital Care technology fund to pay for a new Integrated Care Portal. It will link together all community systems such as social care, mental health and ambulances to give one view of each patient record. Along with that there will also be a Patient Portal giving people a view of their own data, monitoring appointments and communicating with health providers.

So, at least with Luton & Dunstable, there’s light on the NHS horizon and the future looks bright as IT transformations power real business change - and that’s great news for the patients.

How did HP Helion help?
