EUCALYPTUS – PRIVATE without boundaries

Known for its AWS hybrid capabilities, the Eucalyptus open-source solution (Euca4.1) is the perfect bridge to enable Private Clouds without boundaries. This understated piece of the HP Helion portfolio, enables new Open IT alternatives for the multitude of Private Cloud Options.

Eucalyptus Cloud Platform.JPGWhether it is a tiny SW-only pilot, a multi-tenant customized private cloud, or a dual-datacenter HA enterprise Cloud, the Eucalyptus solution supports many deployment options, management styles and interoperability capabilities. Technically the Euca solution is the SAME open-source cloud-code for all these above examples. The same code-base allows Helion customers to effortlessly bridge between a small standardized on-premises implementation and a large multi-site custom solution. That same open-source Eucalyptus also provides AWS compatible functionality and services, running on YOUR hardware and under YOUR control (basic or managed).

The ultra-efficient linear scaling Euca management plane can grow from tiny SW-only POC deployment to full enterprise-grade, without breaking a sweat. All of this is possible while offering the entire gamut of services for compute, storage, network, and advanced orchestration:

  • PRIVATE : EC2-style Compute with direct-and-transparent AMI portability
  • IAM Authentication and Authorization with STS security token service for transparent PRIVATE to future multi-DC-hybrid approaches
  • EBS block storage and S3 object capabilities, so on-premises workloads can mix and match
  • ELB load balancing, Auto Scaling services and Cloudwatch monitoring can ALL be run in PRIVATE, never having to connect to the outside world
  • Additionally CloudFormation templates can be leveraged in PRIVATE Eucalyptus clouds, whether home-grown and tuned to your orchestration-needs, taken directly from EC2 or built by one of the many AWS ecosystem partners

The unprecedented level of Open-IT interoperability creates cost effective PRIVATE replacements where applications can be repatriated without any modification to the workload, design patterns NOR developer/administrator mindset:

  1. New cost-saving consolidation capabilities:
    • The Eucalyptus-bridge allows business leaders the capability to bring cost effectiveness to today’s Cloud sprawl; where initial PUBLIC claims have resulted in budget over-runs Eucalyptus empowers consolidation
    • Reclaim PUBLIC experiments that have proven expensive, enabling IT to re-integrate shadow-externals into proven cost effective PRIVATE Clouds

  2. New levels of ROI that do not discount legacy investments, but rather open the doors to leverage heterogeneous environments.
    • Many implementations start “TINY” with a Helion SW-ONLY Eucalyptus, enabling high-ROI through heterogeneous re-purposing of existing HW, to build an enterprise-grade cloud-service solution.
    • Where workload variability has been overstated the Eucalyptus solution helps find the right ROI-driven destination for workloads. Management and Administrators can improve HW usage by using Eucalyptus as the bridge to transition and remotely-manage what used to be AWS-workloads onto on-premise environments that leverage legacy investments.
    • Reduced time to ROI, by quickly taking Eucalyptus and deploying on existing HW; with full-support for heterogeneous HW and underlying drivers. This accelerated time-to-value empowers administrators and users alike to quickly self-provision use-cases and drive business value from the EUCA PRIVATE cloud (JUST like consuming from AWS, at times users are not even aware of the difference).
  3. Multi-faceted Co-Innovation on a budget, ensuring interoperability with full-AWS-API support and AWS ecosystem while also providing a bridge to future OpenStack ecosystems.
    • Seamlessly develop, collaborate, and migrate between on-premise and AWS where Eucalyptus workloads can easily be moved ensuring high-level of fidelity between respective API. Remove shackles of PUBLIC network-storage-or-compute consumption costs while keeping full interoperability.
    • Envision open innovation without boundaries, to allow cost effective hosting on-premises and only use PUBLIC when limits are pushed and more capacity is required.

The number of options continue to grow for IT leaders, but few deliver the boundary-less Eucalyptus capabilities that enable new levels of cost effectiveness post basic virtualization and cloud adoption. This overlooked piece of the Helion Portfolio can help bridge and rationalize initial cloud efforts towards scalable open-IT approaches.
