Education Trends: Hybrid Cloud Adoption Cuts Costs

In a report that surveyed more than 100,000 organizations across industry verticals worldwide, the education industry is moving to cloud the fastest (2015: Cloud Adoption Report/bitglass).

However, while cloud adoption does enable educational institutions to avoid the cost of investing in on-premises hardware, they are finding the need to keep their cloud management costs down.

The industry is finding the solution in hybrid cloud.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise customer Cornell University Center for Advanced Computing (CAC) is managing costs through efficient resource allocation between its private and public cloud environments.

The CAC’s hybrid cloud—Red Cloud—enables access to academic resources on a subscription-based model. This allows the center to maximize its resources while managing cost overrun risks by bursting to public cloud as needed.

The hybrid cloud has also opened up the possibility for researchers to share their data openly.

The CAC built its hybrid environment by first building a private cloud environment on HPE Helion Eucalyptus, an open source solution designed for building private clouds compatible with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Integrating its public cloud and private cloud environments enables the center to burst seamlessly to public cloud.

“The fact that we’ve been successful with Eucalyptus for five years, and it continues to grow, is the best sign that things are working well—that there are people spending research dollars to use this resource.”

Significantly reducing costs for private schools in Australia, Triforce Australia is delivering a complete solution for enabling integration with leading public clouds.

A service provider, Triforce Australia works with the schools to create a central point of management for running internal systems by building a private cloud environment. As a result, the schools are seeing lower costs for management of their internal networks.

Triforce Australia is doing this by helping the organizations integrate HPE ConvergedSystem, which is hardware configured with HPE Helion CloudSystem. HPE Helion CloudSystem is an end-to-end private cloud solution designed for traditional and cloud-native workloads, and is built on OpenStack® architecture to support multiple clouds.

“The ConvergedSystem allowed us to have one prebuilt, ready-to-order system that met the requirements of the school,” said Abbas Aly, managing director of Triforce Australia. “It was less training required for them to be up and running, and software then allowed them to manage their internal network but enabled for them to connect with [Microsoft] Azure or Amazon, as they required.”
