HP CloudSystems stand apart


When it comes to technology specifically designed for the Cloud, what does HP have to offer?

Kirby: First off, I think it’s important to stress that if someone is set up to purchase blades, and 3PAR and our networking to add to existing infrastructures, there are still options available to them. But what we are hearing increasingly from our customers is that they no longer wish to do things that way. They no longer want their IT staff dedicated to defining and assembling their infrastructure. That’s what HP Converged Systems are really all about.


Cloud1.jpgHP Converged Systems for virtualized environments really are targeted to deliver a virutal system substrate for Microsoft or VMWare. Our design point is for about thirty I/O operations per second per virtual machine. We feel that covers a large number of workloads. For Big Data, we can build an HP AppSystem specifc to SAP or Microsoft Big Data workloads. When we talk about the Cloud, though, what we really focus on is the HP CloudSystem. Interestingly enough, HP CloudSystem was really the pioneer for HP in the Converged Systems space.


HP CloudSystem is shipped from the factory largely configured. You have someone from HP come and set it up on-site. So by the time the delivery is finished, you’re ready to start designing, provisioning and deploying cloud services with the tools to comprehend the storage, server and networking infrastructure.  An important aspect to remember is that we feel that HP is uniquely positioned to deliver a fully integrated solution across any cloud environment — from private to public to hybrid cloud environments.


HP CloudSystem delivers:

  • Numerous platforms — multi-hypervisor, multi-OS and heterogeneous infrastructures — so you are not locked into one platform across activities.

  • Intelligent automation and orchestration, so you have the ability to define the Cloud services you wish to provision.

  • Rapid application and infrastructure deployment, so once you have defined the resource pools that match the request, you can automatically deploy the service.

  • Services to expand capacity and burst from your on-site infrastructure to specific public cloud providers when the need arises.


Finally, there is workflow automation in the background to make certain you have all these elements working together correctly. We also have the ability to deploy both virtual and physical workloads, so you get the best of both worlds as part of the same platform. Simplicity is critical here. So a typical end-user can choose a service from a catalog without needing to know what’s necessary to provision the infrastructure and applications; how to manage and monitor the Cloud; and how to release resouces. All they do is initiate the service through a single portal.


And HP CloudSystem can employ a lease system. What we’ve found is that many of these services are provisioned, and used, but then the resources are either forgotten about or no longer necessary. With HP CloudSystem you can lease what you provision, so once the service is not longer needed, the resources are released back into the resource pool for use by other requests.
