HP Helion pushes Australian service provider past competition

When the Australian state of New South Wales launched a clearinghouse to help government departments buy reliable, secure, and flexible cloud services, IT service provider Triforce saw an opportunity to grow its customer base. But the company had to move fast.

Triforce formed a subsidiary, DataKnox, to go after the business. That was the easy part. A more difficult challenge was finding a robust, flexible, scalable solution with maximum credibility and to cement a competitive advantage.

Counting some of the biggest enterprises in Australia as customers, Triforce/DataKnox was no stranger to providing cloud solutions to clients with Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and MacTel. It had also established a private cloud on its own platform to provide primarily Backup-as-a-Service and Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service solutions. But with the establishment of the new state government initiative, GovDC Marketplace, Triforce/DataKnox needed a rock solid hybrid cloud solution.

"Speed to market was essential for us," said Triforce/DataKnox General Manager Corie Marinucci. "We needed a solution that could scale very quickly and that could adapt to a new customer base. And because we were in a very competitive situation, it had to come at a comparatively low cost to us, and it had to be a hybrid private/public platform."

From years to weeks

After benchmarking HP solutions against Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services offerings, Corie said he wasted no time going with a handpicked suite of solutions from HP. "Everything pointed to HP," Corie said.

As with all HP Helion Cloud solutions, DataKnox's cloud offerings are based on HP Helion OpenStack, which delivers a common architecture across private, public, and hybrid clouds to support cloud-native infrastructure services.

The company used HP Helion CloudSystem Enterprise with HP ProLiant DL Blade Servers, HP 3Par StoreServ storage, and HP Networking switches, routers, and software-defined networking technologies, then leveraged that to incorporate a HP Helion Managed Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). This completed the hybrid cloud solution in which it could offer IaaS, PaaS, and other services. The company also turned to HP Services to help deploy and configure the solution.

It was deployed in only a few weeks. "Robust technology like that could take months or years to implement because there's usually such a large learning curve," Corie said. "But we were up and running very quickly, offering customers the wide range of services they were looking for. You have to remember, we are in a very competitive market with mature offerings, and our HP solution gave us the ability to compete with a hybrid platform almost instantaneously."

Rising to the top

For DataKnox—one of the top 10 HP Premier Partners in Australia—its decision came down to the reputation of the HP brand. "We had instant credibility with our customers because of HP. The HP brand, the robust nature of its architecture and platform, the technical support—all that pointed to us going with HP, and our customers know they're investing in great technologies with great services," Corie said. "They need to migrate their data to an enterprise grade platform and they see a real safety net with HP."

DataKnox also received peace of mind from HP Services and HP Financial Services. "The combination of support we received to implement the backbone of the platform, combined with our own technical expertise and experience, really gave us a leg up on everybody else," Corie said. "They gave us tremendous assistance in setting up our production platform. HPFS provided the ability to procure and support the actual technologies quickly and reasonably, making us a major presence in the marketplace."
