HP and Cloud Foundry® Foundation: Bringing agility and scale to enterprise cloud-native apps

Guest Post: Bill Hilf, SVP, HP Helion Product Management

Today is a significant day in the evolution of open cloud computing.  The launch of the Cloud Foundry Foundation marks a milestone for developers and IT and the formation of the Foundation will help foster the growth of a broad community to build and expand the industry’s leading open PaaS.

There has been incredible momentum leading to this milestone, here’s a few facts:

  • The Cloud Foundry Foundation has nearly 50 members – including HP, IBM, Pivotal, EMC, Intel, VMWare, SAP, Huawei, Cisco, CenturyLink, Symantec, Accenture, Canonical, and many others.  There have been few other open projects with this type of industry collaboration at the inception of a Foundation effort.
  • Cloud Foundry is the leading Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) open source project and has seen a 36 percent increase in community contributions, nearly 1,700 pull requests, in the past year.
  • The project is also being used in a variety of commercial deployments including Pivotal CF, IBM Bluemix, HP Helion, and Canopy Cloud Fabric among others.

For HP, the Cloud Foundry project is a critical part of our overall HP Helion cloud strategy.  It’s the core of our HP Helion Development Platform and we are fully committed to the growth and success of the Cloud Foundry community. I am very honored to represent HP on the newly formed Foundation board of directors and am very excited to work with the other announced members, all of whom are equally committed to the Foundation and the community’s future success.

When we look back at the evolution of the Web, the infrastructure that we use today is dominated by open source software – Linux®, Apache, Nginx, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Chef, Puppet, Ansible, PHP, Ruby, Python, Node.js, Go, etc., etc.  It’s our belief that the evolution of cloud computing is and will follow a similar arc – market-driven demand for open based technologies and solutions, stemmed from the unmistakable cycle we have seen in the past where innovation and value are created by empowered individuals and a community fiercely collaborating in a transparent process, improving on each other’s ideas.

The Cloud Foundry project is an excellent example of this – a development platform built by developers in an open environment.  The Cloud Foundry Foundation will provide the structure and stewardship for the continued advancement of this powerful community, and HP is honored and excited to help lead this evolution to a truly open cloud computing future.
