HP and Open Source on Display Next Week at OSCON

Authors: Adrienne Krefft, HP Helion and Stephen Spector, HP Helion

HP is pleased to be a Diamond Sponsor at next week’s OSCON in Portland, OR.  We have many HP employees attending who will be available at the booth in the expo hall (#601) to answer your toughest questions.  There are also a few sessions we are highlighting at the event.

They’re here. Now what?

Allison Randal, HP and President of the Open Source Initiative is speaking on Wednesday July 22 at 9:45 in the Portland Ballroom.

The early days of the open source movement were all focused on creating an approachable on-ramp to software freedom. We focused strongly on the practical benefits of free software and refined the message, hoping to help the professional software sector better understand what we’d been saying since 1983. We succeeded to such an extent that modern open source is characterized by active use, participation, and contributions from the largest Fortune 50 software giants to the smallest Silicon Valley startups and everything in between. Success in our first goal doesn’t mean we’re done, it only means we’re due to clearly define the next phase of open source. The potential of what we might accomplish, using the resources of the entire software industry, is both inspiring and daunting. Will we live up to that potential?

Start your journey with OpenStack® and Cloud Foundry™

HP Helion is offering a full day of OpenStack specifics on July 21st, 2015. Start the day off with an IAAS ops crash course:  OpenStack basics - featuring HP Helion OpenStack.  For the afternoon session, developers can deep dive into PaaS with Developing and deploying cloud native apps on Cloud Foundry and OpenStack with HP Helion.

If you’re unconvinced about what OpenStack can do for you, Chris Cannon, Technical Evangelist, HP Helion provides an overview of OpenStack, and a hands-on introduction to HP Helion OpenStack. This workshop will cover a variety of topics, from installing the product to performing basic tasks in your newly-built cloud. Walk in with your laptop to connect to an onsite cloud and perform a series of guided tasks – where you will deep dive to learn about OpenStack, and the capabilities and unique features of the HP Helion (an OpenStack distribution). We’ll show you how easy it is to configure, deploy, and manage OpenStack in your existing data center by providing your applications the resiliency, agility, and enterprise-level support – all with no vendor lock-in. Find out why OpenStack is the fastest growing open source project worldwide.

After lunch, learn how to develop and deploy cloud native applications with HP Helion Development Platform, an open, interoperable platform based on Cloud Foundry and OpenStack technologies.  Developers gain quick access to applications, frameworks, and services required for cloud native development. Rajeev Pandey and Sujay Maheshwari, HP Helion, take you through a hands-on tutorial. Explore programmatic mechanisms to interact with OpenStack for existing application migration. Develop your first app with the language of your choice like Ruby, PHP, Java, and .Net. Next, delve into Cloud Foundry and how this abstraction helps build, test, deploy, and manage scalable cloud native applications composed of micro services using the HP Helion Development Platform and 12 factor methodology. Bonus: free access to a HP Helion cluster for learning and exploration.

Ironic: A modern approach to hardware provisioning

Devananda van der Veen, HP Helion is presenting a talk on OpenStack Ironic on Wed 7/22 from 2:30 – 3:10pm in E141.

In this session, Devananda will demonstrate how to install Ironic with Ansible, modify a cloud image for bare metal, and deploy it to a server. He will discuss the history and architecture of the project, and its current goals and challenges. Attendees should be familiar with the task of hardware provisioning and standards like PXE and IPMI, but do not need deep knowledge of related tools.
