HP’s Cloud Strategy, 3 pillars to address varying needs


A couple weeks ago, HP announced the private beta of HP’s Cloud Services. Despite clearly stating this new offer was focused on developers and ISV’s it seems the overall HP Cloud Strategy got lost to some-- if I read the CloudPro blog entry correctly. Let me set the record straight and explain HP’s cloud strategy in clear terms.

1 Size does not fit all

Let me start by stating that one size does not fit all in cloud, as I pointed out in a separate blog entry. Indeed, varying requirements for security, compliance, data access, integration with legacy applications etc., imply varying cloud characteristics. These can be grouped in four categories:

  • Private cloud is on premise, dedicated to one organization, often located in the same datacenter(s) as the legacy applications; address the needs of mission critical applications and applications having access to large amount of confidential data.
  • Hosted private cloud is really a variant of the previous category, located either in the client’s or the hoster datacenter, but managed by a hosting provider. It addresses the same needs as the private cloud.
  • Virtual private cloud is a single or multi-tenant environment, located in a clearly defined geography, with documented and auditable security processes & procedures, clear SLA’s, addressing the needs of business critical applications. Formal contracts are established, payment is by consumption, but with regular invoices. Access to the environment can be over the internet, VPN or leased lines. HP calls this an Enterprise Class Cloud.
  • Public cloud is a multi-tenant environment providing IaaS, PaaS and/or SaaS services on a pay- per-use basis without formal contracts. Payment is typically via credit card. Such environments address the needs of web applications, test & development, large scale processing, (if not too much data needs to be transferred).

The first two categories are asset intensive and typically do not lend themselves to a pay-per-use model; the latter two are pay-per-use. The first two are typically single tenant, this means they are used by one organization; the latter two are most often multi-tenant environments where multiple companies share the same assets.

HP’s Cloud Strategy

As I mentioned earlier, one size does not fit all, so HP has developed products and services to address all four of those categories. We group the first two together as their characteristics from a products perspective are the same; we added hosting service capabilities to the second. So, this leaves us with three offerings:

  • HP CloudSystem is an integrated platform for building and managing cloud services, addressing the needs of private and hosted private clouds. It includes servers (both X86 and Itanium servers), storage and networking as well as a complete software stack. Actually CloudSystem comes in three flavors. One can even start with one and then upgrade to the next one if required:
    •  HP CloudSystem Matrix, focused on the delivery of Infrastructure-as-a-Service offerings, typically used by IT departments that need to be able provision additional infrastructure quickly. It’s a good starting point for IT departments wanting to gain experience in deploying cloud. CloudStart, a complementary service package, helps you implement a working private cloud in less than 30 days.
    • HP CloudSystem Enterprise allows enterprises to deliver cloud services to their business users. These can be IaaS, PaaS and/or SaaS services delivered through a self-service portal and catalog. Heterogeneous hardware can be included to enlarge the cloud resource pool, if required. 
    • HP CloudSystem Service Provider is focused on service providers that quickly want to build a cloud through which they can propose not only their own services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), but also third-party services to their customer base. Indeed, service aggregation capabilities have been added to this offering.
  • Enterprise Cloud Services is HP’s virtual private cloud offering. ECS-Compute, HP’s first offering in this space provides IaaS services to enterprises wishing a very secure, location aware, resilient environment to run their business critical applications using a consumption-based model. ECS uses HP’s extensive experience in hosting to provide you with an offering combining a secure and personalized hosting offering while taking advantage of the cloud model.
  • HP Cloud Services, currently in private beta, is HP’s response to the needs of developers and ISV’s worldwide, looking for an open, next-generation platform to develop their applications. At the moment, HP Cloud Services provide both IaaS services and object storage.

To complement this offering, HP has a number of services supporting you during your journey to cloud. We typically start with the Cloud Discovery Workshop, helping you look at all aspects related to the implementation or consumption of cloud services and allowing you to gain consensus amongst your teams on what approach to take. The Cloud Roadmap Services then help you detail the route forward. Most of our customers already have applications running in a traditional IT environment and are looking at the best way to take some of those applications to the cloud. The Application Transformation Services help you assess your applications and identify the best route forward for each of those. Other services address areas such as security, datacenter design, etc.

We have a full set of services to help you finance your cloud implementation.

Although cloud is more than virtualization alone, some of our customers want to start with virtualization while they consider the cloud. Although not technically a part of our cloud strategy, we do offer HP VirtualSystem for those who want to quickly set-up a virtualized environment in the datacenter.
