Introducing the Orchestrated Datacenter: Automate operations and bring harmony to IT delivery

Imagine a symphony of professional, highly trained musicians playing their instruments with passion and skill, but completely out of synch with each other. Would you care about the artistry of each performance? Of course not! Because the overall musical experience they create is not well orchestrated, it is impossible to appreciate the talent and craft of individual musicians.


It is no different in IT today. IT organizations are tasked with delivering end-to-end services for infrastructure and applications, while concurrent revolutions in cloud computing, mobility, big data and security are redefining what enterprise users expect from their applications and IT services. End users want a well-orchestrated IT symphony playing in beautiful harmony.


These are complex changes. Operations teams must adopt user-centric approaches for quickly and consistently releasing applications to production; develop interactive but reasonably priced services; and rapidly solve issues as they come up, ideally before users experience the issue.


IT professionals need to manage the complexity of accelerated delivery of services across traditional IT or cloud environments—whether it is a full stack of infrastructure from storage, network, servers to databases or right up to the application layer. As an IT organization, success depends on efficiently orchestrating operations across functional silos, eliminating the hand-offs, delays and errors that lower the end users’ experiences.

In this post, I would like to explore the larger vision of the Orchestrated Datacenter, and how it enables your IT superstars to work in harmony with automation solutions to rapidly create rich and interactive experiences for the business.

Managing services, not just infrastructure

IT organizations must shift from just managing infrastructure component to managing the lifecycle of services. But how do you make this shift?


We see at least five key areas that will help you make the shift in the near term:


  1. Service mapping and consolidation — Analyze services and key service components to identify potential candidates for re-architecture or cloud deployments.
  2. Comprehensive automation — Automate the tasks across all elements in the datacenter and instill a disciplined approach to orchestrating IT processes.
  3. Open and heterogeneous automation — Leverage existing investments in multi-vendor components, plus correctly incorporate the growing use of open source tools by app-dev teams as part of the automations in the datacenter or cloud environments.
  4. Service portability and easy consumption — Ensure the flexibility to design services once that can be deployed everywhere—across traditional, private or public cloud environments for both legacy as well as modern distributed applications.
  5. Actionable insight — Measure how well IT is doing.



1. Service mapping and consolidation — Creating an actionable transformation map of services


Few IT executives likely understand or have a clear roadmap of how their key services need to evolve to create rich and interactive experiences. Most enterprise applications are rigid and too monolithic to support the agility and mobility requirements of the business. For example, the data layer might be tightly coupled with the presentation layer requiring a rewrite to support mobile devices.


HP Enterprise Maps helps you analyze and identify modules that need to be deconstructed or reconstructed and services that need to be re-architected or migrated to cloud environments—and the result is an actionable cloud transformation roadmap. Enterprise Maps also allows enterprise architects to plan, translate and map the business requirements to existing and new services, ensuring that business needs are met as the end-to-end services are created and managed.


2. Automation mindset — Implementing the discipline of orchestration across the entire operations lifecycle


There is no question that in the IT industry, and even inside individual IT organizations, there are pockets of excellence when it comes to automation. Overall, however, many still heavily rely on homegrown and difficult to maintain scripts, and grapple with an overabundance of tools, many of which are just being left on the shelf.


IT workflows are characterized by non-standard and manual processes, which make it difficult to support the agility requirements of the business. In addition, the rapid provisioning of servers, databases and applications introduces a regulatory and operational compliance risk.

HP Operations Orchestration (OO) brings order to these sporadic approaches. With more than 5,000 operations out of the box, you can orchestrate across the operations lifecycle, from full stack automation to include processes for monitoring, help desk and change management systems.


The latest enhancements to HP OO 10.1 include advanced remote debugging and multi-author capabilities that help deploy process automations easily, eliminates risk and guesswork out of debugging flows. They also allow admins to troubleshoot issues without introducing risk to production environments and simplify the coordination of automated tasks across teams, tools, and environments.


3. Open and heterogeneous automation — Adopting open source and leveraging multivendor environments


With app-dev teams using more open source technologies, IT operations needs to keep pace in how it moves releases to production. IT ought to employ the same tools to manage the existing multivendor components as it does newer open source technologies and resources in the cloud.


To simplify deployment, HP Server Automation now embraces Chef, the emerging open source standard for application and system configurations, as well as OpenStack, the rapidly growing open source standard that makes it easy to abstract infrastructure resources in cloud environments. 


Using SA policies, IT can quickly take advantage of Chef Recipes and easily manage virtual machine deployments in OpenStack and public cloud environments, including operating system provisioning, patching, software deployment and compliance management. This will let application test-dev teams transition Chef Recipes quickly and consistently to production without having to worry about separate Chef Infrastructure overhead.


4. Service portability and easy consumption — Designing once, and deploying in different environments


IT also needs service designs that are flexible enough that they can be deployed across traditional, private or public cloud environments and work with both legacy applications and modern distributed applications.


The Topology-based Flexible Modeling in HP Cloud Service Automation 4.1 (CSA) provides an approach to service design that is agnostic to how each component is provisioned. With automatic import of Chef Recipes at the time of service definition, it offers a comprehensive content library of more than 300 application patterns, including support for Big Data platforms like Hadoop and no-SQL databases like MongoDB, CouchDB and Hbase.


CSA also now provides a new IT shopping cart experience, allowing end users to select and order multiple service offerings at one time from the CSA catalog, which also supports aggregated pricing and individual subscription service management


5. Actionable insight — Learning and taking action on the status of IT automations


A crucial final piece of the Orchestrated Datacenter is demonstrating its value. Many IT organizations still struggle to convey why IT matters, and justifying the effectiveness of automation and cloud 


Delivered as a capability within HP Server Automation, Automation Insight, which is built on the HP HAVEn big data platform, measures the many facets of value delivered to an organization by IT by unifying reporting across products and data sources to measure the status of automation, as well as the state of compliance, server operations, and frequency of updates across the datacenter.
