Look your best: Demonstrate the ROI of your IT operations

IT professionals who are eager to advance their careers can learn a lot from Patty Azzarello. Like a lot of us, Azzarello started as an entry-level engineer, but she was able to quickly rise through the ranks of technology companies to become a VP, General Manager, President and CEO.

 

I had the good fortune of hearing her speak and I’ve also read her book, “Rise: 3 Practical Steps for Advancing Your Career, Standing Out as a Leader, and Liking Your Life”. Her advice makes a lot of sense:

  1. DO Better — Make sure your work has enough impact and takes advantage of your greatest natural strengths, and don’t burn up too much time on low value work
  2. LOOK Better — Don’t be invisible, take actions that build your credibility so that you’re trusted more and can get more done (your credibility will get you quicker approvals)
  3. CONNECT Better — Build a network of mentors and sponsors to provide support for your work and career

It’s the second point, “LOOK better”, that I think can be a particularly big challenge for IT Operations professionals. How do you build credibility with the people who can help your career?

Prove your value

It’s always important to communicate your accomplishments. You need to prove the ROI that IT or a specific project delivers. How does what you do save money, save time or help the business? Professionals need to find ways to tell that story in concise, effective ways, which is crucial especially as the information about your work travels higher into an organization. Never underestimate the power of colorful, graphic representations or images — they can be immensely valuable calling cards.

It’s one of the reasons that HP Operations Orchestration software (HP OO) provides a way to track the ROI of the automated flows within your environment.

As systems become more automated, the value they provide may become less obvious, especially to non-technical people. IT needs to demonstrate the ROI of the automated and orchestrated processes (i.e flows), and the IT professionals that monitor and maintain them.

Here is how HP OO helps. Every time a flow runs, the value of the relevant steps in the flow is summed up and added to the values from other runs to maintain a total value number. It’s all visible in the HP OO Dashboard (Figure 1), which can display information about flow execution and the associated ROI in daily, weekly or monthly time ranges. You can also use public REST APIs to create your own customized report for whatever time period you require.

Configuring ROI

Of course, every organization relates differently to the ROI of automation. You may relate to it as the number of people-hours saved or money saved, while others look at it as the value delivered by a specific automation.

To configure the ROI feature within HP OO, you assign an ROI value to relevant “steps” of the HP OO flow. You simply state that the successful completion of a step represents a certain ROI value.

 

By capturing this information, you can quickly and elegantly communicate how specific automation systems contribute to the organization as a whole. And over time, having those clearly defined metrics should add a lot of value to your career too.
