Open source creates cloud flexibility for Beijing UnionRead

China is the world's fastest-growing cloud market. By 2018, China’s public cloud market could reach nearly $20.7 billion, which is a compound annual growth rate of 31.5 percent, according to Gartner estimates. The same research says that for the CIOs of China’s largest companies, cloud is the number one priority.

Beijing UnionRead is the country’s leading content distribution network service provider and hybrid cloud operator. It is particularly strong in the gaming and mobile Internet markets, both of which place high demands on virtual networking and computing. The company is now looking to expand into several new sectors with hybrid cloud services. These include education, health care, transportation, and finance—each with its own specific needs.

To manage these unique demands, UnionRead wants to offer an integrated service, collaborating with a single supplier. The company wants to be faster to market, and get the opportunity to work quickly when it spots an opportunity in a new sector, and the company wants better control over cost.

Finally, the technology has to be open source so as to avoid the issue of vendor lock-in. UnionRead wants the freedom to be able to bring in niche vendors when creating industry-specific solutions.

“It is relatively rare for companies with numerous projects to make use of only one or two cloud technologies or cloud service providers,” says UnionRead chairman and founder Peng Yang. “For us, the key question is whether these technologies can interact with each other to provide a more efficient hybrid cloud."

Open source and a platform for innovation

UnionRead is the first service provider in China to deploy HP Helion Cloud solutions, which are based on open source technology, thus ensuring the company is not locked into one vendor. The products deployed include HP Helion Hybrid Cloud, HP Helion Development Platform and HP Helion OpenStack, all supported by HP’s OpenStack professional, consulting and technical services.

The services provided by UnionRead's hybrid cloud includes Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) computing, storage and networking services using the HP Helion OpenStack commercial edition. UnionRead's hybrid cloud also offers Platform as a Service (PaaS): the HP Helion Development Platform, based on Cloud Foundry, enables customers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to build cloud-native applications using a flexible, open architecture. UnionRead can either develop applications and services for its customers or offer development services to them.

Finally, UnionRead can provide Software as a Service (SaaS), with services from HP and HP partners spanning a wide range of business applications, such as big data analytics.

UnionRead is now able to use the most advanced technology to develop cloud solutions that meet the specific demands of users from different industries, yet retain the freedom of open source. This not only accelerates innovation, but also helps expand the business.

During initial trials involving UnionRead’s hybrid cloud services, more than 1,200 manual configuration procedures were simplified to a few automated steps that could be completed in just a few hours.

In addition, HP Helion products' excellent security, manageability and reliability ensure the continuous operation of UnionRead's cloud platform. This helps reduce the costs involved in the construction and maintenance of a public cloud.

Creating a first-mover advantage with HP Helion

As a cloud service provider, and being China’s first provider of OpenStack-based HP Helion Hybrid cloud services gives UnionRead a first-mover advantage. It cements its position as a leader in the market for cloud services and strengthens its relationship with HP, the most advanced cloud technology provider. Being open source enables UnionRead to develop solutions with no vendor lock-in. All of this underpins UnionRead’s ability to create industry-appropriate solutions, supporting its expansion into new sectors.

Most importantly, in a fast-moving, $20 billion market, UnionRead is well placed to move quickly on new opportunities.
