PCP Partner delivers services on demand with flexible pay-as-you-go cloud

It’s one thing to offer IT services and quite another to offer IT services built on cloud technology. With IT spend declining and more customers demanding to pay only for the resources they use, PCP Partner Oy, a service provider in Finland, knew that the cloud was an essential next step in its ability to serve customers. HP Flexible Capacity service was the ticket PCP Partner needed to get there.

Looking for more than aspirin to ease the pain

Finland is a technologically progressive country with many service providers. What’s surprising though, is that very few have adopted cloud computing solutions in the true sense of the word. “Anyone can sell VMware virtual machines from their garage,” says Ville Laiho, CTO of PCP Partner. “We’re talking real cloud solutions.” Aware of the competitive advantages a genuine cloud strategy could enable, PCP Partner tapped HP to guide the company on its cloud journey.

Coinciding with its move to the cloud, PCP Partner wanted an alternative business model that would help the company cope with its capacity headaches—namely, capacity shortfalls, long lead times to gain capacity, and the huge CAPEX investment.

Flexing some muscle

The company settled on a private cloud solution along with HP Flexible Capacity service. HP’s sales team worked in a consultative capacity with PCP Partner to define what the company’s cloud should look like given its needs. Then HP Technology Services got involved to clarify how the Flexible Capacity model could benefit the company and its customers.

Within two months, PCP Partner’s private cloud—a solution built entirely on HP technology—was up and running. The company now runs HP Helion CloudSystem Enterprise on HP BladeSystem, HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage, and HP networking components.

PCP Partner is the first company in Finland to take advantage of HP Flexible Capacity, a service that eliminates the company’s painful capacity issues. Now there’s never any concern about capacity shortfalls. If its customers request more resources, PCP Partner can provide it in as little as five minutes instead of two to three weeks. And because the company only pays for the capacity it uses, expenses have shifted from CAPEX to OPEX. This move has also eliminated much of the risk and guesswork service providers traditionally face when anticipating needs.

From a technological standpoint, PCP Partner is also incredibly impressed with HP Helion CloudSystem’s automation capabilities with HP Operations Orchestration IT process automation. “HP Operations Orchestration is a brilliant tool,” Laiho says. “It’s easy to use,” he adds, “and it gives us an important business advantage because it makes us more flexible in every possible way.”

Servicing above the bar

PCP Partner has a long history with HP, and its satisfaction with using HP technology certainly played a role in this deal. The deciding factor, however, was that HP proved it is much more than a technology vendor. “We were able to show PCP Partner how they could use the cloud and HP Flexible Capacity to change their model and earn more,” says Ari Saareks, Chief Technologist for HP Finland. “We offered a level of engagement beyond the technology,” he adds, “helping them understand what the technology could enable. And that’s what truly resonated with this customer.”
