Polyglot, multi-language, cloud application development

DeborahL

Cloud applications built with the language and tool flexibility to boost developer innovation, enable companies to respond faster to new opportunities and growth with new business solutions. Application development lags when developers waste time coordinating with IT operations on application requirements and having to re-code to support different cloud environments, tool languages and common cloud capabilities all applications need. Developers end up wasting time configuring and troubleshooting the stacks for each development or test cycle or having to wait for infrastructure. The lag in the cloud applications development and delivery has 57% of business customers not satisfied with current application release time1. Barriers like these limit the growth the organization could experience and add to the development cost of each application. With an average cost of $320K per organization per week to develop applications2, cutting time from the average development cycle lowers overall development costs for more budget and time to re-invest in innovation.

Modernize your application development

The solution is to remove barriers that cause lags in application development so developers can accelerate the innovation of new business solutions in the cloud that speed growth and increase differentiation. By modernizing the application development environment with a hybrid cloud development platform that is flexible, integrated, and automated, businesses can reduce cloud app development time by 20% or more, accelerating business growth while reducing overall development costs.  Cloud-native applications, based on open source for flexibility, offer customers solution architectures that are cheaper and easier to scale-out. They are simpler architectures that can be more easily distributed and updated as micro services. Cloud native applications are built in modules that can talk with each other but are separately maintained. Each module is written in the programming language that is best suited for the function of the module. Programmers also need be able to integrate new cloud native applications with legacy code, cutting costs further and improving time to deployment.

Ployglot PaaS and Cloud Foundry

A polyglot Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) development environment allows developers to write application modules in multiple languages with all modules interacting with each other. Each language leverages the skill sets of your developers as well as the strengths of the language itself. Cloud Foundry is a leading example of a highly customizable open source, polyglot, cloud PaaS. It allows developers to code in multiple languages and frameworks—eliminating the potential for vendor lock-in, which is a common concern with PaaS. Cloud Foundry is well-suited to a continuous delivery strategy by supporting the full application lifecycle—initial development, all testing stages and final deployment.

Enterprise-grade cloud-native PaaS

As part of the HPE Helion development portfolio, HPE Helion Stackato is an open source polyglot PaaS that is a commercially supported and extended version of Cloud Foundry for multi-cloud deployments. You can use Helion Stackato to easily deploy applications written in a wide range of languages and web frameworks using a variety of data services by pushing your source code to the system. Helion Stackato handles the automatic configuration of the language runtime, web server, application dependencies, databases, and other services. You can run Helion Stackato in your own data center using the hypervisor of your choice or on your favorite cloud hosting provider to provide a private or public PaaS.

The HPE Helion Development Platform integrates Helion Stackato with Helion OpenStack, providing a complete open source based, integrated and automated, PaaS and private cloud solution.  It includes managed and unmanaged application services provided through HPE Helion OpenStack database and messaging products, empowering your developers, testers and IT teams for improved performance

Beijing UnionRead Information Technology Ltd used HPE Helion development portfolio tools to build a leading, open, hybrid cloud platform that accelerates cloud-native app development for their demanding finance, internet and gaming, healthcare, transportation, and education customers. The deployment of the HPE Helion Development Platform has given them the ability to quickly make deliveries to meet business needs resulting in more business opportunities. The HPE Helion Platform tools enable the offering of both IaaS and PaaS services so their enterprise clients can flexibly deploy applications and cloud solutions within minutes with reduced complexity and management challenges. Based on open-source technologies, the platform has significantly reduced the costs required for the construction and maintenance of the public cloud solution and ensures that ‘vendor lock-in’ is avoided.

The HPE Helion Development Platform offers cloud-native multi-language development and deployment solutions based on open source—for portability and flexibility—with integrated IaaS and PaaS to automate DevOps processes and automate application services for accelerated development velocity and productivity. HPE can help you power modernized cloud-native app development and deployment that will give you the speed and business agility to lead in today’s competitive landscape.
