Private Clouds Go Mainstream

Every business or government agency requires its own ‘Right Mix’ of public and private cloud computing. This has been HPE’s point-of-view and it is now widely copied. Kudos to Forrester Research for being among the first tech analyst firms to acknowledge and evaluate the burgeoning private cloud market beginning in Q2 2011. Lauren E. Nelson has led the analyst coverage of the private cloud market from the early days and is now the recognized leading analyst worldwide. Along the way she advocated for improvements in private cloud software to attract developers through simple self-service and to abstract infrastructure through standardization and automation, much like public cloud operators prioritized during their earlier cloud years.

Earlier today, Forrester published The Forrester Wave™: Private Cloud Software Suites, Q1 2016. In their most recent market evaluation, they essentially declare that the industry has moved from nascent to fast-growing; from experimental to business critical. More directly, Forrester states that “enterprises are finally building true private clouds.” Their 2015 annual survey determined that 67% of enterprise hardware decision-makers consider building an internal private cloud a high priority, with speed-to-provision, control of the user experience, and fully-published APIs the three core criteria that matter most during the selection process. And, 51% are making software-only investments to build out their private clouds. Interestingly, only 12% are exclusively using open source software (not a distribution). Note, the research calls out OpenStack as a primary or alternative solution supported by “almost every vendor.”

Hewlett-Packard Enterprise is no stranger to the Leader wave position

Hewlett Packard Enterprise also started as the early champion of private clouds, declaring early that the road to hybrid cloud, starts with private, not public clouds. In this Wave, we are excited to be named a ‘Leader’ again.

The 2016 Wave report states that “HPE receives top scores for automated provisioning, depth of templates, compliance tracking and cost monitoring.” While we are pleased with our rating as a ‘Leader’ , it should be noted that this evaluation was based on earlier  versions of HPE Helion CloudSystem and HPE Helion OpenStack, due to the Wave evaluation cut-off date of July 2015. Had HPE Helion CloudSystem 9.0 and HPE Helion OpenStack 2.0 been evaluated, we’re confident a few of the scores would be even higher!

The Private Cloud Picture will be even brighter in 2016

In this Wave, Forrester trumpets that “the private cloud picture was brighter in 2015”. We believe 2016 will be even brighter. This is the year that Enterprise IT really begins directly serving their rising developer class with a great experience. Public cloud partnerships, such as the HPE/Microsoft Azure partnership, will showcase lifecycle automation spanning Helion private clouds and Azure. Bare-metal will see a resurgence driven by containerization and desire for superior IOPs and low-latency mobile. 100% certainty on data locality and protection will become a base enterprise requirement (do you know exactly where your data is now?). And, end-to-end visibility and control in a multi-cloud world will start with a solid private cloud foundation designed for interoperability.

Combine our composable infrastructure (HPE Synergy) and the era of the full programmable stack gets really exciting; a private cloud stack that achieves the ultimate speed in provisioning, near perfect utilization, ultra-low latency operations and built-in security. Maybe it does not get any better than that!

Every organization has its own Right Mix of Private and Public Clouds

Forrester states in the report: “Ultimately, the best mix of cloud technologies depends on your use cases, compliance requirements, existing investments, application portfolios, developer skill sets, and future investment plans in specific staff skills.” We totally agree.
