Re-Post: HP Helion Development Platform, HP’s Cloud Foundry Distribution More Sharing Services

Guest Post: Rick Evans, Senior Evangelism Technologist

Q: What is HP Helion Development Platform (HDP)?

A: HP Helion Development Platform is HP's distribution of the Cloud Foundry Foundation's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) technology.

Q: What is PaaS technology?

PaaS basically helps programmers to FOCUS on creating the code for cloud aware applications, by automating away all the mundane tasks of setting up all the underlying components (infrastructure) required to host their software. The infrastructure for running a modern "cloud aware" application can be quite complicated. But even when the infrastructure is relatively simple, getting it set up and running in a cloud environment can be irritatingly time consuming and prone to problems.

Additionally, PaaS automation makes it possible to create an environment that can adapt to changes on demand to the application, and even make it possible for the application to continue running when some of the servers, or other networked components required to host the application, stop working.

Q: But isn't that what an Integrated Development Environment (IDE, like Eclipse or Microsoft Studio) does?

A: Well yes. EXCEPT a PaaS focuses on being a set of tools that embrace the software patterns and best practices for creating applications that run really well "in the cloud." These best practices include workflows known as Continuous Integration / Continuous Deliver (CI/CD).

Additionally, by adhering to a relatively small set of standards recommended by Cloud Foundry for configuring your application, you should be able to move your application to run on any Cloud Foundry environment, regardless of vendor.

Also, there are integrations of Cloud Foundry's automated workflows with popular IDE tools, so you shouldn't have to abandon using your favorite IDE.

Q: What is Cloud Foundry Foundation's PaaS technology?

A: Cloud Foundry Foundation is an open-source PaaS project. The Foundation provides a governance model that maintains a "level playing field" for the contributors in the open-source project. Cloud Foundry is a PaaS project with a slightly convoluted development history (see this Wikipedia article for more details about that history --https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Foundry). If you are familiar with how the OpenStack Foundation works, you will find the Cloud Foundry Foundation is conceptually the same. Hewlett Packard was one the founding members of the Cloud Foundry Foundation (as well as the OpenStack Foundation) at its inception.
