Service-Flow deploys apps 400 percent faster with zero downtime

A leading Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider of IT service integrations, Service-Flow is in the business of providing simplified service solutions with out-of-the-box functionality and a high service level guarantee. Backing Service-Flow in providing its customers with the value of rapid go to market, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Helion Stackato is an essential piece in keeping the company’s high business standards intact. HPE Helion Stackato private Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solution enables Service-Flow to maintain access to the cloud-based infrastructure its services are running on so it can continuously deploy new features to customers with zero downtime.

Kai Virkki.PNG“HPE Helion Stackato enables us to focus on development instead of having to manage our own servers and infrastructure,” said Kai Virkki, chief architect, Service-Flow. “With HPE Helion Stackato, we are able to frequently deploy updates to tens of applications at a time, run our own software on the cloud infrastructure of our choice, and easily exceed our service level guarantee with 99.999% availability.”

 The PaaS solution

From the get-go, Service-Flow wanted to get up and running quickly without spending excessive time and budget on managing its own servers. But to establish automated resource provisioning and maintenance-free deployment an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution could not provide, Service-Flow went with a PaaS solution. With HPE Helion Stackato, Service-Flow built out clusters for production and testing on Amazon Web Services (AWS), simplified management of a large number of stack compositions and environments, and integrated with CloudBees Jenkins CI accelerating its deployment pipeline. Making the solution stand out from the rest, HPE Helion Stackato also enables Service-Flow to access the underlying operating system its applications are running on instead of limiting the company to access to an API for deploying application packages. This is key for Service-Flow to be able to easily configure networking and test connectivity for customers, and communicate with the IT Service Management (ITSM) tools used by its customers and their outsourcing vendors.

“Without a PaaS, it would take us at least a month to develop the number of updates that we currently deploy in one week,” Virkki said. “With HPE Helion Stackato, we usually deploy tens of applications at a time and deploy updates every day. Plus, we can push to any environment knowing that they are identical to the production environment. HPE Helion Stackato makes it really easy to manage a large amount of software.”
