Six tips for management of complex enterprise applications in the cloud

Applications are the heart of the modern enterprise, from serving customers, delivering products, managing assets, moving money, and performing thousands of other functions. By deploying applications in a cloud environment (public, private, or hybrid), customers can respond to business requirements quickly as well as adjust their service delivery at a faster pace and better granularity than they can with traditional IT methods. Cloud services must be able to manage the complex application and infrastructure environments created when moving traditional enterprise applications to the cloud. Also, as noted in my prior blog, “Four benefits of the right expertise in migrating enterprise applications to cloud services,” organizations with complex app environments need experience and insight to help guide the choices they make around transforming and managing those applications in the cloud.

 

To manage the complexity of enterprise applications, and their infrastructure, when migrating them to cloud services there are six tips to keep in mind as you enable cloud management capabilities. To achieve the resiliency and efficiency you want from the cloud while minimizing modification requirements, your enterprise cloud management must:

 

  1. Support the broad mix of hypervisor platforms traditional apps are built, tested and certified on today. It should support the wide range of expanded hypervisors— and the bare metal supporting them—including VMware ESXi™, Microsoft Hyper-V®, Red Hat® KVM. This means organizations don’t have to recertify their applications to work on something they are already familiar with and are comfortable using.
  2. Support bare metal provisioning that some enterprise applications may still need. For example, this would include support for diskless blade environments as compute nodes. Cloud management solutions like HPE Helion CloudSystem 10’s support of blade configurations and single tenant bare metal as a service that traditional apps may take advantage of.
  3. Support tighter private cloud administrative controls to meet sensitive app compliance requirements. For example, when data is in transit, protection of the data must be maintained by encrypting communications between internal/external APIs and be PCI-ready—enabling customers subject to PCI compliance (retail, finance) to become certified. Readiness of the management environment to enforce this should be based on lab assessment and verification conducted by an external audit firm, against all the 250+ security requirements specified in the PCI DSS (Data Security Standard) v3.1 standards document. You should look for solutions that provide this out of the box such as the recently announced HPE Helion CloudSystem 10.
  4. Support intelligent resource management to meet specialized app infrastructure requirements.  Your cloud management needs to be able to create and support dynamic “placement groups” that can sense hardware characteristics. When new infrastructure is added, the compute nodes are tagged with HW capabilities (SSD, RAM, core count, GPU, Fast Fabric, etc.) and then automatically placed and aggregated into the right resource group, enabling the provisioning of instances (via GUI/API) based on workload needs. This capability is supported in HPE CloudSystem and allows you to intelligently target workloads to infrastructure through support of availability zones— and host aggregation improves separation of usage by different groups and services.
  5. Support multi-IaaS management for multi-tier apps. A single design should be able to be provisioned on different private or public clouds and be portable with subscription time selection of resources, environments and projects—addressing the universal desire to optimize service price/performance and reliability while leveraging the unique value of various cloud IaaS offerings. One example is HPE Helion CloudSystem 10 which has the ability to match a service component to a particular IaaS resource pool. For example, the database tier of a traditional application can be directed to land on a blade with SAN storage, the application server can be directed to a high-availability configuration, and the web servers directed to a scalable low-cost server pool, ensuring optimal application performance, reliability and the lowest cost resource needed for the required function.
  6. Support enhanced networking configurations. This ensures the demanding network performance requirements in multi-tenant cloud environments can be met. For example, support of multiple external networks allow for greater network traffic configuration options and should allow DVR and VXLAN and for VLANs and VXLANs to coexist within the same cloud. HPE Helion CloudSystem 10 includes these new enhanced networking capabilities, along with support of multiple VLAN data trunks. You should also consider network provisioning automation that can translate application service designs and then provision the networking needed for each application, which is especially important in multi-tenant and shared cloud environments. HPE Distributed Cloud Networking is an example of a vendor-agnostic solution that lets customers deploy one network fabric and divide it into different virtual networks, each scaling to meet the demands of thousands of tenants having unique application requirements, distinct security policies and committed service levels.
